Scale insects are a type of aphid. The tell-tale sign to watch for is fresh honeydew appearing on the leaves. It's actually shot out quite some distance, so I'd then have to work back to find the infected leaf it came from.

Thank you for the info. I read the link you initially posted, because I was curious if they were aphids.

A little trick I have used in the past, was to mix a solution of water and a few drops of liquid dishwashing soap, and mist the infested plants, taking care to cover both top and especially bottom of the leaves. Always worked well for my needs, to rid them of aphids. But something to keep an eye on. :wink:

Mine were outside shrubs.

Yes, that is a good trick and I've used it myself on other sap-suckers. Trouble with scale insects is that they build themselves a waxy covering (or 'scale') that protects them from anything you'd spray on them. The only way to attack them chemically is systemic, through the sap they are sucking.

Thank you for the info. ...always something for me to learn.

Sorry, I didn't know what the shrubs were named. Had to search. I kept them trimmed into a hedge. Were nice, but aphids were a issue I had to keep an eye on.

Euonymus japonicus

Mine were variegated in color, mostly yellow.

Anyway, I'm sure you know much more than I, about how to manage the plants.

Actually, I didn't have enough 'suck' to get sufficient water into the hose to start the syphoning. In the end I had to 'prime' the hose by filling it from a tap.

Well, that was a productive afternoon.

Never make two journey when one will do. Today I combined a trip to a garden centre to investigate rain barrels with a trip to my local ~~rubbish dump~~ recycling centre to to dispose of an old rotary washing line pole. They have a charity 're-use' shop there, and wandering round I found an identical barrel to the one I already have. So for £10 (about $12) I have now doubled my rainwater storage capacity. :thumbsup:

I still popped into the garden centre for a browse. Turns out that a similar sized barrel is £75 new.

I am thinking about increasing my tank size as even 200 gal does not go far enough when it is dry for several weeks. I have a 5700 liters tank where I stored honey that I will not have a use for anymore.

With careful rationing my first barrel was nearly enough to see me through last August's drought. Two barrels should hold 420 litres (110 gal US). That should be enough to see me comfortably through a similar dry spell.

I just need some rain to fill them now. However, the next 10 days are forecast to stay dry and sunny....
