It seems you'll get no more notifications of the type: "person' has replied to the thread 'title'. There may be more posts after this" until you have read the post being notified about. The notification remains 'unread', and if 25 more notification for other threads it will drop off the bottom of the drop-down notification list, meaning you're unlikely to see it. The effect is that you appear to get no more notifications, the reality is more that you have a notification you haven't yet responded to and you won't get a new one until you have dealt with it.

If, like me this weekend, you are going to be away from the forum for any length of time, then when you return it's best to mark all as read so you'll start getting new notifications again.
