@WXC Until one experiences shingles for themselves, no amount of words can describe what it's like. Despite all its pain, it becomes an equal amount of mental and physical misery. About 25 years ago I had one episode of it in my face and head and have been fortunate so far that it hasn't returned. A couple of times over the years I felt the nerves twinging in my face and immediately began taking the Valtrex that my doctor told me to always have on hand. Now that I'm old, I know I need to get the vax but just haven't done it. Please take extra good care of yourself. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Hi, Glasskuter.
Indeed, it is dreadful. I had not heard of "Valtrex", but will indeed read and/or ask my doctor about it. Thank you so much for mentioning it.
I truly appreciate you taking the time to write the thoughtful reply.
And certainly, thank you and appreciate your thoughts, and especially prayers.
Glasskuter,
I just read that Valtrex is an anti viral medication.
Unfortunately, I missed the boat on that, as explained by three doctors. I was told for an anti viral to be effective, it needs to be started within 72 hours of onset.
Here's the kicker in my situation. For ten days, I thought I had a pinched nerve in my back, causing the pain down my right leg, and was treating it as such, thinking it would eventually pass.
I also experienced pain in my stomach and across my kidney area (lower back). Little do most outside the medical field know, shingles can be internal as well. Which is apparently what was going on with me.
Then on day ten, the shingles (blisters) presented themselves externally. Dear God, was not a fun time. But by the time my Doc's realized it, it was too late for the anti virials to combat it.
Just this morning, I got a refill of Gabapentin. Now on week seven of this discomfort, I fear the nerve damage to my leg and foot may be lifelong. Only time will tell.
I went from being a cross country runner, to barely able to walk, overnight. And the weeks of sleep deprivation, is finally taking a toll.
it's dreadful.
Sorry guys, I promise not to mention it further. :)
