In Chrome Canary the favicon for inactive tabs that are discarded now fades to let the user know that the tab has been discarded, just like in Edge:

The Sleeping Tabs concept is a crock of horse:poop:! In Edge it is, anyway!
Just as much resources being used whether sleeping or not, a loaded tab is a loaded tab.
Plenty of services working somewhere in the mix, not to mention tabs that engage a WebLock.

If you need to discard a tab, you have to do it manually..., or, just close it!

Google is testing another animation on the favicon when a tab is discarded, instead of just dimming it, in the new animation a ring is drawn around a dimmed and reduced favicon:
