My mom has an HP Slim Desktop S01-PF1013W Desktop that originally shipped with Windows 10 but was compatible for the Windows 11 Upgrade. So it was upgraded to Windows 11. As of this week (March 2025), after installing Windows Update KB5052093, the operating system has been having performance issues. These issues occur when typing a web search, checking emails with Microsoft Outlook, or doing Windows Updates and they feel like the system is choppy and lagging. As in the system hangs up, then responds, hangs up, then responds, (hope that makes sense). I have read where this is a common issue with the latest update on some CPU's with Windows 11. This is an Intel Celeron CPU. Intel Celeron G5900 CPU.

Thanks and I look forward to your responses!

Hi, Jesse.

When I searched that HP on the HP website, there are only drivers and information available for Windows 10. I’m surprised it was updated.

No offence intended, but the specs for this machine indicate (to me at least) that eventually, the OS with current and future updates, will start to show strain.

Did you try removing the update?

I have not tried removing the update yet. Last I checked though, there were some driver updates for Windows 11 but not the current releases.

Depending on when 24H2 installed, within the last 10 days you should be able to roll back to 23H2?

Jesse, I think that 23H2 would be a lot less stress on that PC?

Fair enough. But seeing as this is your dear ol’ mum, it may be less stress on the PC using 23H2. It’s just my opinion of course. I did notice strain on my PC with 24H2 so I rolled back to 23H2

Of course if it was updated to 24H2 all that time ago, your only option would be an image created when 23H2 was active, if of course, you made one?

I still find it interesting that it was updated to 24H2 without using a workaround. I see that the CPU supports SSE4.2 but couldn’t find any info on TPM.

Good to know though (y)

There is an option to uninstall the latest feature update. I will do that.

Good idea, Jesse. At least then you can see if it is in fact that update causing lag.

You can always reinstall it.

I use WAU Manager to prevent updates, you can allow specific updates to install and prevent others.

As I see it, from the HP website, this desktop has 4GB RAM. Is that enough to run Windows 11 ? Would it be better off with windows 10 ?
Or perhaps you might install another compatible 4GB RAM stick in it and try ?

@antspants, it is actually less buggy after I removed the latest quality update. Should I still revert back to 23H2?

Yes unfortunately, Jesse. 10 days is all it hangs around for. The only options would be:

  • Restore an image (If you have one)
  • Reinstall Windows 11 with a 23H2 ISO if you have one and If you have the patience. I have one on my server that I uploaded for a member.
Stopping that update would be the first port of call, if you can’t do the above.

I will reinstall. I have a pretty fast internet provider here and I am not busy at the moment. So, it shouldn't be too painful.
