Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware


Remarkably Painless Clean Install of Windows 11
on both my incompatible platforms. ​

I have to say I'm utterly surprised how easy this was!

Desktop - Windows Pro ( System 1 ):

o Failed the most recent Health Check because it had no TPM at all.
o Failed the most recent Health Check because it's CPU wasn't on the guest list.

Using a MCT usb of 22000.194 I used the simple instructions found here:

I had an internet connection the entire time.

My only extra clean install effort was at this point when I got the message:

This PC can't run Windows 11

Whereupon I simply shelled out to an Admin cmd prompt and ran this regedit file as suggested by the above link:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\LabConfig] "BypassTPMCheck"=dword:00000001 "BypassSecureBootCheck"=dword:00000001 "BypassRAMCheck"=dword:00000001 "BypassStorageCheck"=dword:00000001 "BypassCPUCheck"=dword:00000001


That was it!!!

Laptop - Windows Home ( System 2 )

o Failed the most recent Health Check because it's CPU wasn't on the guest list.

And yet I got absolutely NO error messages at all on this one - a pleasant surprise.

I was able to install with a Local Account using the fake@fake.com headfake found here at step 21. ( Thanks @Brink )



Summation:
While my normal workflow had taken a big hit at first ( i.e. Context and Start Menus), once I found where things were, I'm seeing more and more advantages to it all

This was a by far less scary experience than I'd earlier imagined. Maybe with a clean install it's easier, I couldn't say.

Of course tomorrow's CU will be an interesting milestone on this adventure, and yet I have every bit of faith in our amazing members to find a way of helping us keep old hardware alive and feeling young!

You might be able to upgrade it. Some of the hp machines can. Maybe can be also done on Dells that are not too old.

This registry hack I used with several different KEY values than MS provided worked with NO TPM on the Desktop PRO. Oddly I never had to delete this file:

C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\appraiserres.dll

Ok...was bit by the bug. I decided to use my old Dell XPS 13 9350 w/ i7-6600U and followed the method of running the Windows 11 Setup, deleting appraiserres.dll and selecting not to immediately get updates, and it installed without error. I was able to use Windows Update after install...but we'll see if that continues. Otherwise, I did do a backup image with Windows 10. Admittedly, I agree with some articles I read that Windows 11 isn't that noticable an updgrade from Windows 10...in fact, it seems to reduce the amount of personalization that Windows 10 had. I'm sure I'll get used to it.

If I visit my parent's house I will attempt to upgrade an even older Vista era Acer laptop (see my specs) from Windows 11 Pro Insider's Preview to the latest release (RTM) by deleting the file and let you know. Usual updates install without any complain. Only upgrading to a higher build isn't possible from Windows Update.

One of my pcs is a 4770K on a MSI B85M-E45 mobo - a too old cpu, no TPM or secure boot. I tried all the various hacks to upgrade to Windows 11 to no avail.

As an experiment, I deleted the hidden folder C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\ (probably there from previous upgrade attempts) and also appraiserres.dll from my Windows 11 MCT install USB.

Then I ran setup.exe from the USB (aka repair install) and the pc upgraded to Windows 11 with no problems. I've had a few updates since and it seems OK.

I made a Macrium Windows 10 full image before I did the above, just in case MS starts playing silly beggars on update Tuesdays.

After I was upgraded to Windows 11 version 21H2 by installing a Windows Insider upgrade from MS, I tried to restore a Macrium created Windows 10 image. The Windows 11 OS did not allow that. In case you are able to restore the image in the normal manner then please tell me how.

MS lowered requirements to tpm 1.2 and is allowing more cpu's if they have at least tpm 1.2 also

Where is this written in black and white by MS? All I can still find is minimum Zen 2 or Intel 8th gen CPU and TPM 2.0, which was updated on August 27th.

I've reverted back to Windows 10 a few times when experimenting with the leaked Windows 11 a while back. I just booted from the USB rescue media that you make with Macrium Reflect and pointed it at the saved image I had on a different HDD to the OS. Macrium doesn't seem to care what's on the HD - it just overwrites.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

I do not have TPM at all, so I will keep using the hacks. Thank you for sharing. By the way, has anyone compared performance of Windows 11 to Windows 10? Is it the same? Is it better? What applications or games you are using? I'm trying to see if it is worth installing, apart from the experience, of course.

PS: In dxdiag I noticed a new graphics feature, called DirectX 12 Ultimate, which of course is disabled in my old GPU. How is that enabled? Is done by installing a modern fast GPU, or there is any other setting?

Everyone say 11 is faster overuse of the term snappy lol
Frankly I see no difference so far I have not ran any benchmarks atm

This guide does not mean MS has lowered any minimum system requirements. This is just a guide how to get around them. MS even says that it is not recommended to do this workaround unless specifically instructed to do so by MS themselves. Non of these workarounds are stuff that MS endorse or support. you do everything at your own risk.

Hi,
If that little warning turns you off not sure what to say besides it clearly state tpm 1.2 is a new minimum warning or not besides the warning is more because the cpu is still not listed as compatible not because tpm 1.2 is an issue

Odd.. but it doesn't. MS has supplied a work around but the strongly recoment not doing it.
