Could you install Windows 10 64bit on that machine? Apparently N2600 will run 64 bit. And then maybe do a W11 in place upgrade to keep the Windows 10 graphics driver? (That was going to be my next attempt if the vista driver didn't work).

I find it marginally faster than Windows 10 on the netbook actually. It boots quickly, hangs for quite a while at login page, but once open everything is fairly nippy. Youtube videos play fine.

The problem is not installing 64-bit W10, the problem is that there are no suitable graphics drivers for the N2600. All official driver development ended at Win7. Anyway, for a 'take anywhere' web browser its x86 W10 + basic display driver is good enough - even YouTube is watchable, though the frame rate can be a bit low ;)

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

Google says n2600 is gma 3150 - same as mine - the N570 also uses GMA 3150. if so then this vista 64 bit one might work. I just downloaded the .exe file and double clicked on it to install and worked well. It wouldn't install via device manager but double clicking on it worked.

Maybe it will, but a 64-bit OS in 2GB RAM feels like it's struggling on this Acer AOD270, while 32-bit (even with the MS Basic driver) is snappy enough for my travelling needs. Every 32-bit driver I have tried (and believe me, I've tried every one I could find) has worked but would BSOD on me, usually as I shut down.

I may try x64 again as an experiment, but for a reliable 'go anywhere' netbook I'm happy enough to keep using 32-bit W10.

Ok- see what you mean. I thought W11 only came in 64 bit anyway - so I just installed it snd used the 64 but vista driver. It works well. To me it runs better than windows 10 did. But only tinkered around with it so far.

1 I decided to upgrade from Windows 10 by using the downloaded RTM ISO in a Repair install [In-place upgrade] procedure i.e. mounting the ISO then running its setup.exe.

I set Power options beforehand so the monitor would stay on the whole time and I'd be able to glance over to see how it was getting on.

2 Then, while setup.exe was running [it was preparing itself for several minutes after starting], I used File explorer*** to watch its temporary working folders populate [C:\$WINDOWS.~BT] then I deleted
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\appraiserres.dll
[thus bypassing compatibility checks]
before then responding to the Ready to install dialog.
*** I might have had to set File explorer to show hidden items but didn't make any note of this at the time. ​

3 The installation then ran without incident.
I deliberately chose to skip updating during the installation.

4 This procedure worked. My wildly below spec computer now has Windows 11.
The update took 3 hours on this non-compliant computer but I was happily getting on with work on one of my main computers so I didn't care how long it took.

5 PostScript - Windows update has been running automatically on this computer and has installed updates without any action being taken on my part. See my post #285 on the next page of this thread.


Whilst I have only described using the Repair install / In-place upgrade procedure, some of the other guides about upgrading to Windows 11 include advice about Clean installs as well.

Thanks for this as it worked on my System 2. I don't recall which screen it was that I stopped at to delete the .dll file but before letting the installer continue on to do the checking. Installed, updated, and working fine. Again, thanks.

I upgraded my old Acer laptop (see my specs) from the Insider's Preview to the official 21H2 release of Windows 11 using the same trick. That is running Setup inside Windows 10 or the earlier Windows 11 build to do an in-place upgrade to the newer build. Before proceeding I deleted the file C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\appraiserres.dll from setup cache thus bypassing any compatibility check. Upgrade completed successfully and I also run Windows Update and installed all updates without any issue.

Amazing that it is possible to install though and it sounds like a computer just for testing/experimenting. I have it on an atom netbook as well. It works. But take your point - it is only on the laptop with the i7 processor I can see how smoothly it works.

Try3 did install to a Celeron which is an interesting experiment; on my i7 Skylake Win 11 runs as well as on my i7 Cometlake, near as I can tell.

I upgraded my old Acer laptop (see my specs) from the Insider's Preview to the official 21H2 release of Windows 11 using the same trick. That is running Setup inside Windows 10 or the earlier Windows 11 build to do an in-place upgrade to the newer build. Before proceeding I deleted the file C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\appraiserres.dll from setup cache thus bypassing any compatibility check. Upgrade completed successfully and I also run Windows Update and installed all updates without any issue.

Greetings to all from a new member,, I have read posts and I also have i7/7700k besides TPM 2.0 and UEFI etc,, I installed win 11 on an SSD I reserve for testing on 10 Oct and I have had absolutely NO issues and have received Cumulative updates for this month plus security updates for Defender ..
I checked the update catalogue page and sure enough,, what I received and yes,, it can be used as backup in case..
Hopefully Microsoft blinked??
