Years ago I saved some images in the same size as the icons located in C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll [but a different file name] and could access those for use on shortcuts. It's been too long and can't recall the process but it worked for me with 3 x 340MB HDDs and changing their icon in file management so each drive had their own colored icon. So maybe something can be done similar to the Snipping Tool of Windows or just do screen copies and edit to get what is desired.
