Location for User account pictures?

Hello,

I did a fresh install and for some unknown reason, my user account image doesn't seem to be right. It has no transparency, which I'm confident it should. Look at the screenshot below

I tested again by creating a new account and it seems to be alright there. It's just this default account created by unattend seems to have this issue. If you have any idea how can this be corrected, I shall be highly grateful.

Also, can anyone help me locate where this image is found? I changed the user image for my account but for some reason, this stays as it is.

The default account picture is located below:

%ProgramData%\Microsoft\User Account Pictures

The account picture per account is cached in the folder below. You will need to turn on both Show hidden files, folders, and drives and Hide protected operating system files to see the images.

C:\Users\Public\Public Account Pictures\<SID of user>

Hi Brink, thank you for the response. I checked the \Public\ folder and there was nothing in it. I tried changing the default account picture from \ProgramData\Default Account Pictures\ then pictures appeared in \Public\ but it's still the same on Logon screen.

Is there any way to completely reset the account picture and start fresh like when Windows first boots to the desktop after fresh install? I'm thinking that might resolve the issue but unfortunately I don't know how to do that.

Yes sir, I certainly did. However, I deleted the reg keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AccountPicture\Users
and that seems to have fixed the issue. Now it's back to normal, they way it should have been.

But the second issue, where the account pic wasn't displayed in Control Panel\User accounts remains. Still trying to find where the Windows read the property from.

so you're now looking for the square one that shows in control panel, correct? does it not show up in

?

Thanks bud. The issues remain. I think the problem is how the Windows caches the user account picture files. When I was having the issue with the account pic on Logon screen, I tried changing the picture from the one come default with Windows 11 stored in ProgramData folder. Windows has cached that image somewhere, that I think is the most probable cause. I'll look more into it and post if I find something.

Use your original picture, set it as your account picture via settings app.

Log off. Logon.

Then create (Name of file, resolution, format)
user (448x448 bmp)
user (448x448 png)
user-192 (192x192 png)
user-48 (48x48 png)
user-40 (40x40 png)
user-32 (32x32 png)

Place all inside “ProgramData\Microsoft\User Account Pictures” folder. Make sure naming matches. Overwrite originals in the folder (backup originals if you want).

Group policy > computer configuration > all settings > Apply the default account picture to all users > enable

Log off. Logon. Change that GPO back to Not Configured.
