Solved Log on two users warning whenever I restart or shut down Windows 11

I'm getting the same message that Balubeto got on 26 March 2023. When I go to shut down, Windows will ask if I want to do that because I and other users will loose any unsaved work. However, I've checked Task Manager and Settings and I'm the only user listed. I don't even have a Guest account. Any thoughts?

No . Just me. I also checked the Family section and I'm the only one listed.

In that thread you quoted, this seems like a plausable fix? I don’t know:

I remember having the same problem. I was able to fix it by going to settings, accounts, sign-in options and disable "use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up after an update". Do this for the guest account and if needed for yours also and see if the problem will go away!

No worries.

I do notice, however, that when I go to the Family section, it does show my name under Your Family. I don't think that would cause a problem but I wanted to check and see what you think.

A friend replied with the following message:

“This is a generic message. It's not saying you have multiple users; it's a copy-paste warning to let you know that if there were other users with applications open it could cause data loss when the system is shut down.

As to what's causing the message to be thrown; it could be literally anything. Random background processes can cause this to show on a shutdown. This message is just a generic shutdown warning, nothing more”

Which Shutdown option are you using? Does it happen with Start > Power > Shut down?

If I do it through the sign in screen - before signing in, as in Power (bottom RH corner) > Shut down, it always warns whether other users logged in or not

If I do it from the Start menu > Power > Shut down, if no other users are logged in > no warning

Mine is the same, I am mostly sure.

But I agree, it is most likely a generic message. That was my first thought when this thread was created. However I haven’t checked as I basically never shut down and haven’t, at least, since this thread was started. Will check after an update today.

My computers don't do that, unless I actually have another account logged on. If I boot to the logon screen and shut down, I don't get any warnings about other users being logged on. But then again, I have all the ARSO stuff turned off (the stuff Ants mentioned in #4).

Here's an idear... when it happens again, cancel the shutdown, and open a command prompt (administrator-level not required, but maybe do it anyway).... type query session and see what you get back.

if you boot and login and then lock your user account (NOT logoff), the power menu on the signin screen SHOULD warn you that other users are logged on. that is because that menu is being accessed by SYSTEM, not your user profile.

if you boot the pc and DO NOT login, or log in and then LOGOFF, the power menu will not warn you because no user is logged on currently.

If you use any power off method from within your user profile, while ONLY YOU are signed in, you will not receive this message

If you use any power off method from within your user profile, while there truly IS another user account locked/they switched user... you will get the warning.


*bottom line for OP is: if you're logged on and your account is locked, NOT LOGGED OFF, this message will and should show... as it is SYSTEM attempting to send the power off command

I entered that command from the Terminal but got an error message: "Get-Help : Get-Help could not find query in a help file in this session. To download updated help topics type: "Update-Help"." Should I have typed that somewhere else?

I think I understand. And that worked. When I logged-out and then shut off the computer, I didn't get the message. Thanks dacrone! I have so much to learn. But that's why I built this computer. Learning about computers is fun!

Something is awry. That command works in PowerShell or command prompt. It seems like you typed help somewhere.

Hmm. I went to the Search window, typed Command Prompt, and then typed "query session." The system replied "
'query' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." When I opened Windows PowerShell and entered "query session", it gave me a similar message, but in red instead of the white of the Command Prompt.
