I've not yet needed to do a restore. Have you noted the difference in speed with and without Rapid Restore?

It depends on how much you are restoring and how much has changed e.g. If you had say 50gb to restore, that could take 10 minutes or longer depending on type of drive. If you have only changed a few things, the restore can be less than a minute.

I back up frequently anyway, so the restore is not usually that much different to version I am overwriting.

I often take an incremental image or full backup, install something to test it, then if not happy, revert to backup made just before installation.
That way I know there is no detritus from the installation on my pc.

RDR in combination with incremental backups is like a system restore on steroids. Of course, I keep data on a separate drive to avoid losing any data since last backup. I never use restore points as they are temperamental anyway.

For somebody with your experience, I am sure you will find RDR to be a great tool.

I only know of one other tool (Casper) that has a similar feature. None of the mainstream tools have RDR or similar.

I hope they add a one time purchase option before actual Black Friday on the 24 th as I already own a perpetual 4 PC license for Reflect 8 Home but I only need 1 more license as I have added an additional windows installation in the last year and that installation is currently on the free version,

Also I am hesitant to go the Annual route now as version 9 may be just around the corner in the New Year and I would then have to purchase licences for all 5 PCs anyway and would rather deal with a one time purchase plan.

From my observations on this forum and others, people tend to prefer the one time purchase model as opposed to a yearly subscription. But Paramount Software appear to be pushing the yearly subscription model for Reflect. Or have I read the room wrong?

Could be nobody noticed your Post in the "Apps & Software" section but it would usually instantly get noticed in the"Backup & Restore" section because that's where most of the Macrium threads are usually posted although sometimes it can be tricky determining what section to make a Post in that will be seen by others.

What I cannot find is if that lease price is only valid for 1st year (plus six free months) or does it go up to full price thereafter.

The six months free could be a poisoned chalice as I bet you do revert to full lease cost and you cannot take advantage of a probable next Black Friday deal a year later.

My advice to ordinary consumers - do not buy a lease.

Buy as many perpetual licences as you can afford.

If One Time price stays at £58 then I may get 1 licence (I wanted 2) since my second device is a 'secondary' device and not used for storing stuff. Macrium could have had £80 off me if they had reduced it to £40 but it is what it is.

The annual plan includes "Access all future releases (new features & latest fixes)" so it will get v9 (v10, etc.) automatically. To keep the perpetual licenses up to date you'd have to purchase again when v9 comes out as they have "Access to minor updates & fixes for this version only".

Previously Macrium had always offered a 50% discount on purchasing an upgrade licence, but who knows what they'll do under their new sales model?

Your right @cereberus as your renewal would be in mid 2025 (May/June) and you probably have to pay full price, I too prefer the perpetual version and I am hoping maybe Paramount will add a One Time discount by actual Black Friday or at least Boxing week. I think their new strategy is lets see how many Annual Licenses can we sell since it is a new option and if sales are not what we expected than we can put the One Time purchase on sale.

Sadly though almost everything Software/Media related is going the subscription route and only Snagit by Techsmith still has a fair (My Opinion only) yearly Maintenance agreement that only usually costs about 1/4 the price of a next version upgrade.

I just stumped up £18.50 for the BF deal. It renews (if I choose to continue) in May 2025, as I am increasingly switching to Macs this will be an easy decision not to resubscribe.

I'm almost only using Windows on VM's now where there are other ways of ensuring both system and data backups - espcially if you know how to use snapshots - really useful f you install software and then don't want it / or it doesn't work properly. Reverting to an earlier snapshot is fast and also saves the need for Macrium RDR too. I'm sure snapshots are good on HYPER-V Hosts guesting Windows VM's too.

For those unfamiliar with HYPER-V snapshotting :


On the one physical laptop I use as a work machine I have a bog standard Windows system with nothing installed on it other than the default Windows PRO stuff and I enable the HYPER-V system. Then I have as many VM's as I want using vhdx files for any version of Windows that I want or need to run. - The Host machine is easily updateable whenever a new release of windows comes out due to the fact there's almost nothing extra installed on it -- and if I lose the Host system it's a simple matter to re-install Windows again -- the VM's vhdx files and snapshots are regularly backed up to a NAS server and external storage.

My NAS has OODLES of spare storage space on it !!



I find having a load of VM's so you can have windows and applications in different languages etc much more convenient than having to choose this at windows boot time -- and also these can run concurrently if you have a decent laptop. I don't do gaming etc so VM performance in that area doesn't concern me but with passthru etc you can make VM's surprisingly efficient these days with decent hardware.

Update - It's now Black Friday and they are not offering discounts on the One-Time purchase. Still costs £58 per licence, which I consider too high.

To support Paramount I was considering just getting 1-Licence but the current product sounds buggy if you read the thread Latest Macrium Reflect updates .

I really do want to support Paramount but at the same time I want a reliable product so I'll continue to use the Free version for now. I know they are pushing the subscription model but that's not for me.

The product is reliable. It's very reliable. Macrium has a history of releasing updates, then another one not long after to fix a bug.

You can take that two ways...
Glass half empty: They rush updates out without testing properly.
Glass half full: They're quick to respond to customer's complaints.

Regarding licensing. I don't think annual plans are very popular.
