Solved Macrium Reflect unexplained large increase in FULL image size

Dell laptop - Windows 11 Home 24H2, Build 26100.3775
Macrium Reflect Home v8.1.8325

The DELL is my secondary device and is not used for storing data. All I use it for is to browse the internet and Thunderbird emails. Other than this all I do is update installed apps and the monthly Windows updates so unable to find the cause of the 4.8 GB increase in the compressed image size: -
28/1/2025 Compressed image size = 43.87 GB
9/4/2025 Compressed image size = 48.67 GB (71 days later)

There was only one restore point using 531 MB, which I deleted but nothing that I can find to account for a 4.8 GB increase in image size. This equates to around 7.16 GB uncompressed data increase.

Question – Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Maybe a bunch of restore points, or maybe Hibernation.
C:\hiberfil.sys could be the cause.

My browser can sometimes end up with a large cache so check that.

There is a free program called WinDirStat which can analyse your drive and give a graphical representation of the contents....

In addition to the above, I’d add Windows Store app updates, the Windows Component Store increasing, normal updatey-type things. Something like the WinDirStat mentioned above is super handy for tracking this down.

This! I usually make a printscreen after checking it, and log folder sizes in a ticket. Next time when i check folder sizes i open the ticked again and compair it to see where the diffrence went. Without ticked system you can ofcouse just safe it in a folder or copy it in a Word document, and keep track of changes there.

When did you last run Disk Cleanup to include system files?

The occupied space on my C drive can easily vary by 6 or 8 GB (upper 40s to mid 50s, per File Explorer) for no obvious reason...day by day.

No, Reflect specifically excludes restore points from the image, while pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys are stored only as a marker, taking up no space in the image.

The data blocks in Pagefile (pagefile.sys) and hibernation (hiberfil.sys) files will be excluded from images. Data blocks in these files are temporary and not required when Windows starts. These files will be visible in the imaged file system, but will take up zero space in the image file.

^^^ This! I routinely clean up my systems before imaging. My images don't unexpectedly grow.

This only happens when you make a Reflect image from within Windows. If you boot from a recovery usb to make the image then they would be included.

In this case I would not be overly concerned. I would simply look for anything taking up space that I didn't need.

Other than running Disk Cleanup I can't think of much else to alleviate the problem. As for what caused the problem (if it really is a problem) your guess is as good as mine. It could have been old driver packages, stuff left over from updates, or perhaps even an ISO tucked away somewhere. Disk Cleanup might even list it for you before you decide to delete or not. Sorry. That's all I have.

I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.

Personally, I don't worry about it. I have Hibernation turned OFF anyway. 8-)

Thanks for all answers.
As I said in my OP there was only one restore point using 531 MB and I had deleted that.
Hibernate is disabled so no hiberfil.sys file.
I also regularly run an app called Privacy Eraser to remove redundant data.

One thing I had not done is to run Disk Cleanup's replacement Settings>System>Storage>Temporary files but this only found 1.72 GB of data to remove. Nowhere near the 7.16 GB increase.

Ah well! Disk space is not an issue so I'll forget it.

Okay, but are they much larger (7 GB in the case of my DELL laptop) and are you able to account for the increase? In my case I can't.

But it only happened on my secondary device, DELL laptop with Win 11 Home on it?
On my main HP desktop device with Win 11 Pro the image has only grown by 3 GB and that is accountable because I store data on it and use it daily.
