I actually like having a Microsoft account.

However, I share the OP's concern about bandwidth. With about a dozen devices in the household (Windows, Android, MacOS, iOS) of which about half a dozen are always on the LAN, that's a lot of bandwidth.

Microsoft account is OK with me. I use Hughs net which is slow and limited. It does have free hours between 2am and 6am, so I do much of my updates between those hours.

I have a Microsoft account. And I've lived to tell the tale.

I have used a MSA since Windows 10 was released. It is not a problem to me, but it is to many others. Being forced to use anything is just not right, in any society. People have choices that is why Linux exists. I used Linux a great deal in the 90's and early 2000's and it is very stable. It is not the end of the world, it is just one more freedom that is being taken away. Those that have a real problem with it will find an alternative. One does not need MS, Google, Chrome or any other company that is a Monopoly.

People criticize different things. Start menu, taskbar, emoji, media player, round corners, browsers, or a requirement for a microsoft account. Whatever. It is normal. It is silly to say that a product should not be criticized because we have accepted the eula.

There is nothing wrong with the microsoft account itself. But I see no reason why it should be mandatory. Personally, I usually use a local account and only log in to my microsoft account if I need it. I do the same with my android phone, i only sign in to a google account if i need something from google play.

That's the only reason I don't sign-in when setting up a new OS. One shouldn't have to setup a new user just to correct something MS could easily fix.

When you set up a user account and use your MS Email address it uses the first 5 characters of your email addy for the user folder name

You know I never noticed that because ironically the first part of my email address is "admin", thus I always assumed "admin" was a default user account

Regardless, I have no issues with using a Microsoft account. That's me.

Once the install is finished one of the first things, I do is sign-in to my MS Account. I don't understand why MS doesn't give us the option to choose our username when first setting up the OS.

The posts here are going round in circles. The issue is that a current choice is being taken away with no technical justification.

Some people say that is so updates work better. Clearly baloney, as you can change to a local account after installation.

I am not part of the "MS Accounts are the instrument of the devil brigade", but there is a time and a place for either type of account.

When I use virtual machines, they are temporary mostly and any vm with an MS account is shown as a device on my MS account, so I end up with loads of registered devices.

If MS force the issue, I will set up a new JUNK MS account each time I set up a new VM! Of course, only one is needed but if MS can play silly b@gg@rs, so can I.

MS could sweeten this to an extent by letting users select a username rather than the forced name from emails.

That's a good point, though I thought this option was there for a local account setup, but I don't know since I only use MSA.

When setting up with a local account you can choose your username. If you use a MS account, your username will be the first 5 characters of your email.

I just never realized the first 5 letters of my username was in fact from my MSA account address since the first 5 also spell "admin", which I assumed was the default admin account

But again, no issue :)
