Microsoft Edge keeps...

Hi,

Anyone else have this problem, I open so many tabs, including logging in to websites then after so many days, they all disappeared and I have to open all the tabs and login again... I don't know what's clearing them my browser as these settings below (only the top two are ticked). It's very annoying specially as I have about 5-10+ tabs open. Version 119.0.2151.44 (Official build) (64-bit)

What’s in your browser history?

Yes, there may be more to your browser history than meets the eye. Here’s what included:

Search history. In addition to your website browsing history, the information stored by your search engine is stored both locally on your device as well as in your account. If you recently searched for hotels for vacation, for example, or are shopping for specific products, this knowledge of your recent interests can be used to track your online presence.

Saved data. Password and address autofill is a convenient way to avoid retyping the same information over again, but this information can also be vulnerable to leaks and data breaches—especially if your passwords aren’t secure or are commonly used.

Cookies. Tracking cookies are a necessary part of the Internet: they personalize your experience on websites and make online shopping possible. But third-party tracking cookies are used to target specific ads for you, which can seem like an invasion of privacy (especially based on your past search history). They’re also less secure than cookies from specific websites.

Cache. When you visit a website, your browser automatically stores files, data, and background images to help web pages load faster and to facilitate online forms. Over time, this information can clutter up your browser’s performance.

So, it makes sense that what you're experiencing is what is intended to happen when you have it set to clear that information.

You can either:

1. Exclude those sites that you want to remain logged in to (see Redirecting for an explanation)

2. Keep doing what you're doing now. It's both more safe and keeps your browser running better in the long run. Start using a password manager (Edge can do it, and sync to your MSA, but there are also plenty of good 3rd party ones - Bit Warden, KeePass, etc., if you don't want to use the browser) and when you open a site that has been closed it's simple to log back in - even with multi-factor authentication.

Hi,

I'm using a password manager, NordPass with NordVPN and I usually delete my cookies etc manually every 4 weeks, but at the moment its doing it every few days including removing all my open tabs.

I resort to a cookie manager for Firefox to protect session cookies. I don’t use Edge so I don’t know what add-ons are available in comparisson. And I believe with the state of things today, websites are forcing new sessions quicker than what they used to.

Same, I protect the few cookies I want, like here, since there is a 30 day re-sign in anyway.

But I also use FMN to categorically deny all cookies by default, so the only ones allowed in the first place are the sites I need cookies for, of which my protected ones are a small subset. I basically use FMN for cookies like I use NoScript for web scripts.

Still, not sure whats causing this. I thought it was NordVPN, then Bitdefender... Still no clues, it's closed all my tabs and deleted my history...

Are you logged in to your profile using an email address? If so, is that email address also used to log in to a profile on another device? If so, any device where that account is logged in can wipe the history of the account for all devices logged in to that account.

As it’s only recently stated doing it. So you t would be a good idea to do what?, not login on Edge?

No, find the device that is doing this and tell it to stop clearing your history on that device.

Hmmm. Are you using any cleaning apps like CCleaner, or registry cleaning apps, on your system then?

Ashampoo but I disabled cleaning on edge.

And no updates to it re-enabled that?

This is weird. it is not supposed to automatically delete that info like that.

In your first post, the second screenshot shows "And more on synced devices" under browser history. This indicated that there is at least one other device that is also being synced to the same account. Cellphone, tablet, child's device, partner's device .... ?

If I go to Settings > Profiles / Sync all I have ticked is Favourites, Settings, History and Opened Tabs.

Right., So you're synchronizing history. Which, according to the first and second screenshot, will be erased on all connected devices if deleted on one device.

I've disabled the Sync but it's still doing it, I'm puzzled whats doing it...

If it makes you feel any better, you're not alone. None of my tabs reopen on restarting Edge despite having it set to open tabs from the previous session. Nothing changed on my system except updates. I don't think I have anything that's forcing tabs to close and not reopen on restart. Perhaps it's a bug.
