Solved Microsoft Edge not starting

Was in it earlier today and noticed nothing unusual. Tried to go back into Edge this afternoon and all it does is briefly flash its user screen and disappear from the desktop. Nothing entered in either the application or system error logs. Did a 'change/repair' on Edge from the Control Panel but again the brief appearance and disappearance of Edge. Even restarted the PC several times but no go.

I just noticed that during the brief display of Edge, there were none of my bookmark URLs displayed below the HTTP line.

Any ideas?

Try right clicking Edge in the taskbar and select New InPrivate window. If it opens disable extensions for now. If it still doesn't open normally after that then open again and reset settings in Edge's settings.

That option is not available. What I have when right-clicking Edge in the taskbar are:
10 Recent: Search
Run as Admin
Run ISE as Admin
Win Powershell ISE

Uh, that sounds like it is trying to run a powershell script or something else, not Edge.

Edge does not show Run ISE nor Win Powershell ISE as options at all.

Have you tried to customize Edge any time?

I also went to the start/program bar and right-clicked on MS Edge there. Wonder if I should do an uninstall.

You could try to repair it first - Settings --> Apps --> Installed Apps --> find Edge, click the 3 dots, then select Modify. Should throw up a box asking if you want to repair it or not.

Uh, that says Edge Update, not Edge.

If you don't see the one in green on your system, something is wrong. Have you rebooted after performing the tutorial?

Well crap. Fumble fingers here. OK, tried the correct one and once modify was done, Edge briefly showed on the screen then disappeared again. Should I just uninstall it?

OK, went to the MS Edge website and downloaded the setup. After setup completed, Edge again briefly appeared on screen (this time all the bookmarks were where they were supposed to be) and then disappeared again.

This time there was an application error entry:

I also noticed that I'm getting a lot of

system errors that I've never see before.

Norton 360. Never had an issue in 20 years of Norton.

Hmmm. But as an OS as large as Windows changes, it can have issues in the background that is normally should not. I was wondering if it is blocking it from running, before suggesting that it might be something nefarious.

Do you see any instances of Edge in Task Manager as running right now? Try killing them all and then running it again, see if it still flashes briefly.

If it does, try the reset again, this time on Edge, and see if it fixes it.

I was working in my primary MS registered profile and I had exactly the same thing happen to me late this afternoon. It was working fine until about 4:30 PM CT today. I had closed my work profile edge sessions and went to restart it. It opened briefly, and the blinked away. Task manager had no instances of Edge running.

I was able to create a new admin profile, and Edge runs there. I'm suspecting the profile has become corrupted.

I notice that my system and the original poster's systems both use Norton 360 AV. I ran a scan and no problems found. Still looking for an answer. I need to travel tomorrow but will be back online on Friday.

Might very well be something like a corrupt user profile. It was working this morning but not tonight. I have a Macrium backup that was created at 3 AM this morning. I am going to restore the Windows from the backup and see what happens. I'm starting this now so I will be back in the morning.

Hey, discovered something. I restored the C: drive (faster than I thought) and the same thing happened when I tried to start Edge. It occurred to me that Edge is Chrome based, so I started one Chrome session. It started OK with no issues but then I saw that it had an update that was downloading. When the update finished, I got the message to restart Chrome, so I did and guess what?? The same thing happened as with Edge. Chrome opened on the screen and then disappeared.

This might be an issue with whatever MS uses from Chrome to run its system. How do I forward the problem to someone who will look into it?

I've also got a 4K monitor. I was just thinking that this same type of thing happened in games that weren't able to automatically adjust to the 4K screen. In those instances, I had to go into a game ini file and manually change the resolution. Once I did that, the games worked OK.

Could the same thing be happening here - Edge and Chrome not adjusting to the 4K screen? Are there some configuration files I could look at?

Triple check there is not something running in Task manager with Edge or Webview in it. And I have triple 4K screens and Edge and Chrome and Firefox all run on any of the three without issues.

The only common denominator 'tween @rzn6jw and @Big Ukie is Norton. I would check to see if Edge opens in safe mode.
Just a suggestion for now is to download Firefox portable on another PC and use it on an USB stick to see if that browser is also affected.
