Microsoft email about updating third party email apps

I received this email from Microsoft about updating third party email apps. What apps do they have in mind since I only use Outlook and the Mail & Calendar app?

The safety and security of your information is top priority for Microsoft. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you do not act, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on September 16th.

Hi, Steve. I believe it is just a notification stating that 3rd party em clients are no longer allowed to check for mail in your “Outlook” account, something they all have been pushing, Gmail included.
From what I have been discovering, an app password is now needed but I believe that can be bypassed using an authenticator for 2FA. I use MS Authenticator.

If you don’t use 3rd party em clients, ignore the email.

Other possiblilities are, that Microsoft has in fact decided that we CAN NOT any longer use 3rd party apps to check for Outlook mail. I would not be surprised.

bit confused by this -- I have no trouble with emails via imap being read on a samsung phone with the samsung android built in email app and if I send email I can read easily enough in outlook on a computer.

So what exactly is this problem --totally confused with this whole thing. What's meant to have stopped working from Jul 1 -- seems OK to me. Nothing changed. At least for imap.

Exactly what the link says. In short, using only a username/password after June the 11th is no longer adiquate.

Only possible answers I could give you re your Samsung still checking for mail are:

A. You’re already using an app password or authenticator (on setup) to check your Outlook email
B. It’s a slow rollout (but one would think it would be server side one size fits all)

I have no issues with Apples IOS email app, so I am guessing it’s possibly a slow rollout.

EDIT: I vaguely recall having to use Authenticator when first adding my most recent Outlook email address.

I uninstalled the android app, re-installed then added 2 accounts -- no problem. Sent test email to "myself"--and then checked with outlook on the computer --no problem.

I haven't checked whether the android gmail account works or not as I don't use it. The bog standard Samsung email app works perfectly.

(Back your compuer system up first though to prevent data / account settings loss).

Maybe larger companies, Apple/Samsung are currently exempt because they meet the standards of security already?
I am fairly certain 3rd party email apps installed in Windows have to meet the 2FA standards now. If Microsoft is serious, after September, they wont work at all.
