Solved Missing Windows 11 Toolbar after Windows update.

@Winuser #216 The Update history doesn't record this KBs that are uninstalled.

There are very few files on the C: drive that are important other than the OS and the Apps.
I have already taken copies of some of these.
There are no Apps installed on the other discs in the Win 11 PC.

Mount any newer version iso from your desktop and keep apps and files.

To @BaJohn Know this BEFORE you clean install.
1. If you use a MS account, all you personal folders will be tied to Onedrive. If this is not what you want, create a local account during install using the procedure listed in this tutorial step 21

2. I strongly suggest you disconnect all other drives except the system drive before install.

3. If you system is optioned as raid in UEFI bios, your system drive will not be recognized by the installation process until you load Intel Rapid Storage Controller during the 'load driver' phase of the install process. It's in the tutorial. OR you can change to AHCI in bios and the install process will use the MS storage controller driver.

4. Make sure all partitions are deleted and windows is installed on unallocated space. It's in tutorial.

That's good to know.
1. I do use a MS account and will take your advise.
2. Is this so that I don't install OS on wrong drive?
3. Not relevant as not a RAID device.
4. If I go ahead with a 'Clean Install' I will follow the Tutorial exactly (as best I can).
5. Now that Update Tuesday is nearly finished, when would any OS download include those updates (to get the very latest OS), as I would rather download a working system, rather than have these last few KBs to install?

If it's the OEM USB you could use it to restore the computer back to factory new if you ever decide to sell or donate the computer.

That and the fact that Windows will sometimes install the boot partition to the wrong drive.

Just because you do not use raid doesn't mean the option isn't turned on in bios. II just gave you that heads up if your drive is not recognized by the install process.

I do not know if the iso you download from MS will include those updates or not. Even if not, the first time you check for updates you'll get this month's cumulative. I can say I have applied the cumulative to mine today and see no problems so far, but except for only one explorer tweak, my windows is pretty much virgin.

No, not yet.

Updates to the ISO are few & far between.
- The ISO might get updated next week.
- The ISO might get updated next month.
- The ISO might get updated next year.

Before you clean install a new copy, have you tried to update to the new CU of this month?
It seems that the KB5035853 is "suppose" to fix last month's mistakes. It could be worth a shot
if only in dark at this time. Nothing to loose as you will maybe have to reinstall anyways if this
update doesn't fix what is broken.

I have just now

I watched very carefully today 13/03/24 as the windows update proceeded and it showed
KB4023057 completed followed by
KB5035853 the Cumulative Update.
The 'get-hotfix' shows today 13/03/24 loaded
KB5035853 the CU followed by
KB5035967.

Result was the situation that I originally had:- No menu, Taskbar etc.

Now on Monday 11/03/24 afternoon (UK), I installed Macrium Reflect and did a trial 'dump' just to see how long etc following advise given.
(FYI it was about 22 mins)
But that image is a bad one anyway, although Menu and Taskbar are back it has problems with search, closing TaskBar etc.

So I will print out the Tutorial for Clean Install and see if there is anything I don't understand.
It MAY be difficult to disconnect the other discs inside the PC, so I might have to leave those attached.
I assume that just removing the power lead should be good enough, if that is possible.

I've just completed my first restore from Macrium of the disk containing the C; drive from 2 days ago, both to get some familiarity with doing it and also to reenable my Menu and TaskBar. That took 20 minutes, although Macrium logs says 10 minutes, so I was reading and hesitation for half the time. Obviously I've still got my other defects in the OS.
I noticed in Macrium's default settings, that the Windows Pagefile and 'suspend to disk (hibernation)' are not copied, so these will need to be reset.
I'll now try and Create Win 11 Bootable USB Installation Media, which I assume is the item you would have to use if Macrium screwed up restoring the image.

I started "Create Win 11 Bootable USB Installation Media" and chosen the second download "Create Windows 11 Installation Media", which I saved to my desktop as MediaCreationTool_Win11_23H2.exe and ran it.
Product Version are 10.0.2261 and size 9.64 MB.

Currently it is appears to be stuck with 'Getting a few things ready' with a whirring circle and no percentage, and has been like that for nearly an hour. I think this must be a problem - how long does it normally take and how do I get out of this situation?

It normally only takes a few minutes.
To "get out of it", ...end it's process, in Task Manager.

Just right click it, and choose: End Task

For example... if I wanted to stop Firefox from running...

The window is called 'Windows 11 Setup', but I can't find any process that remotely looks like that in Task Manager?

It's in there somewhere.

If all else fails, you can just reboot the computer.

Actually I've solved that problem - So to go forward, can I download the Win 11 stuff on my Win 10 PC and create the Win 11 Bootable USB on it as well?

Yes. The only thing that might indicate you shouldn't... is if you have an infection.

You want to always make that on a "clean" PC.
