After 40 years fixing PC's I'm stumped. Windows 11 Pro, Dell Inspiron 15 with SSD, 3 months old. Last update seems to be a Firmware update. Log into wifi, reboot and passcode needs to be reentered. Added control panel and user files to desktop, on reboot they are gone. Downloaded Dell updated to Downloads folder, on reboot they are gone. Seems to be reverting to some settings group. BOOT to USB drive and SSD isn't available. Regedit changes revert . I'm at the end of the rope. Cannot even wipe the drive and reload.

Hi, Joe, welcome.

You’ve dumped a whole lot of issues into a single thread with no real detail and no question that I could read.

Maybe attack one issue at a time. We have different forum sections for different windows issues and plenty of people who would probably love to help.

Sounds like a temporarily profile - except of course it probably isn't. Can you confirm, is this a local account or linked to a microsoft account?

Thought not being able to save downloads, or make changes to the desktop may have appeared a problem. Trying to layout all the issues to corner what the problem is

It appears to be linked to a MS account . On reboot it complains "Some support options and online tools will be unavailable" until I log into the router again.

Sometimes updates can cause problems with accounts (or there is just a problem anyway) and therefore you will be signed into a temporary account.

Only 1 user on this one and I need to use the pin to get logged on. I tried adding Administrator and it stayed until a reboot was needed. Never tried adding a new user...🤔

Lots of updates on 2-7-25. None of that KB number. It did show "update and shutdown". When rebooting. That would never go away.

Thanks but ANYTHING I add/install/change is lost on a reboot.
I now know why I have avoided installing windows with MS Account and stayed with local accounts!

I left the MS account and went to a local account, made a folder in root, copied update downloads to it. Tried them, some said completed. Then rebooted and the MS account is back, root folder and download files are gone. It is stuck on time, any changes are gone if you reboot

Do you have setup a Write filter? We do this on for example HP machines. Where we want this exact behaivor.

Look for: Unified Write Filter Utility from Dell. Somewhere in the settings you need to enable Write to allow changes to disk/ssd

I got a notification about drive health. It said the SSD was "set to read only...backup in case of drive failure ". I checked properties and that shows 100% healthy. Diskpart dosen't show it set to read only. WTH?

Can you show the output of Diskpart?

list disk

Then typ: select disk NUMBER (where NUMBER is the number of the disk , shown in list disk)
Then type: attributes disk

However we on work use the utility from HP for enable/disable read-only on ssd. Maybe that is also avaible for you dell machine, or maybe even in bios. We don't do Dell machines..

At only 3 months old this would be a prime case for contacting Dell Support as it should have come with a minimum of 1 year of support.

It is stuck on time, any changes are gone if you reboot
That certainly sounds like the SSD has gone 'read-only'.
Make a system image ASAP, or at least back up all your user files, as the SSD may really be about to fail.
