New Edge Browser Control in Microsoft Access

We’re excited to announce the release of the new Edge Browser Control in Microsoft Access! This control allows you to seamlessly integrate modern web content into your Access forms and reports.

How to use the Edge Browser control

You can find the new control in design view in the control gallery on the Form Design tab in the Controls section:

New capabilities and important changes

Unlike the old browser control, you can use the new Edge browser control in continuous forms, reports, and renders for printing. To access Edge’s powerful DevTools, right-click, and choose Inspect.

Navigate to local files

If you want to navigate to a local file instead of a web page, you must use the https://msaccess prefix before the file path in the address. For example: https://msaccess/C:\Users\user\Documents\test.html

Trusted Domains property

By default, navigation via links, and automatic redirects away from the page the browser currently shows, are blocked. To allow these navigations, specify a table name or query name in the Trusted Domains property in the Property Sheet. In this case, the table or query's first output column must contain the URLs that you want to allow the browser to link to and automatically redirect to. This is especially helpful for pages that automatically redirect to a login page that doesn't exist on the same domain.

No Object property

Previously, when writing VBA for the old browser, you'd reference the Object property of the control, which allowed you to use the MSHTML VBA API built into the underlying browser engine. This was useful for performing tasks such as HTML DOM manipulation. Unfortunately, the browser engine used in the new control, WebView2, doesn’thave a built in VBA API, so we added some VBA functions directly to the control within Access. These include:
  • ExecuteJavascript
  • RetrieveJavascriptValue
  • Navigate
  • Refresh
Availability

Edge Browser Control in Microsoft Access is enabled now in Current Channel.
It will be enabled in Monthly Enterprise Channel in version 2307, which will be released on Sept 12, 2023.
It will be enabled in Semi-Annual Channel (Preview) when it moves to Version 2308, also on Sept 12.
It will be enabled in Semi-Annual Channel when it moves to Version 2308, on Jan 9, 2024.

For more information, see EdgeBrowserControl methods. You can find additional info in the Use the Edge browser control on a form article on support.microsoft.com.

We hope this new control will unlock many powerful scenarios and look forward to any feedback on the Access Feedback Forum.

I can't say I understand it all but I feel it's as we've always suspected. If we want to use native Windows apps & have full benefit of all their features, we'll soon be tied to Office 365 and Onedrive, either directly or indirectly. Therefore, we'll all be forced into subscribing to Office 365 in order to have enough onedrive space to handle all the apps and services being integrated into it. MS assumes everyone in the world has fast, reliable internet. Just think, it all started with a simple little MS account. with 5gb of free storage and a ton of gullible users.

@glasskuter You certainly do have my sympathy for your, as you say, "Internet so slow I'm too embarrassed to tell". There's no question that to use OneDrive effectively it requires a reasonably fast and reliable Internet connection.

I'm fortunate to have a fast and reliable Internet connection where I live. I suppose you can call me a "gullible user", as I love my Microsoft 365 subscription and my terabyte of cloud OneDrive. I think it's an incredible buy at $69 annually.

Access is a TERRIBLE DB system - if you want a decent FREE good proper REAL multi-user database system (Access breaks if concurrent users try and update things or it's locked etc) use MariaDB or MySQL.

Even the old Internet explorer could access local files by specifying the local file instead of a web URL so nothing new there - and you could even use it as a basic FTP mechanism too - a bit fiddly but it worked.

I've given up on Teams -- since the old Free Teams classic has been stopped -- the new free one is 100% JUNK -- you can't even do a small test video / audio check on your devices before giving or attending a meeting --- You don't need to have teams installed anyway if you are invited to a meeting. There's a load of better apps for this stuff for individuals who just want to make video calls.

I'm also sticking with the "Cheapo" office 2021 LTSC that I got until it no longer works -- judging also by how Office 2010 still works - and most of the "New stuff" in later versions you can more or less achieve a similar result in Office 2010 anyway - I suspect it will be YEARS before office/365 will be the only office suite able to run on Windows. Office LTSC 2021 is bound to work till at least 2040 or beyond assuming the license still works !!.

If people actually sat down and added up their subscriptions -- its often insidious tiny amounts - e.g a few € for digital daily papers, more € for subscription TV services, yet more € for cloud storage, non Ms Software licenses -- e.g things like Adobe etc that can amount to far more than they realize. Often well over the € 150 - € 200 per month mark !!. (Replace € by your local currency). Companies have realized that since the pace of new products that are only incrementally better than the existing ones is slowing so customers can't be persuaded to upgrade or replace products so often they've decided that the subscription business model is the only way to keep generating cash streams. - Well I'm not falling for this - unless I absolutely have to -- and then I want to pay at a discount a one off yearly fee -- I dont want 100's of trivial monthly direct debits of a few €.

Cheers
jimbo
