I have to say though, I've just about given up with laptops. Originally I was looking for another used HP Pavilion 10th generation - because they had normal sized touch pads and a reasonably decent keyboard. I found two and both were faulty and went back. Only four years old. Hence deciding to buy the new HP in a clearance sale (2 year old model so also had a normal sized touch pad).
They all have ridiculously large touch pads now, which the keyboard pushed further back as a result (and speakers then underneath!) and that doesn't work for me at all ergonomics wise. I've had RSI before and I know what ergonomics work for me. The thinness is part of the problem as it affects key travel which I am perhaps more sensitive to than most.
So I could find a decent 8th to 10th generation used laptop - but in a few years time I'll be in the same position again. So I'm thinking about alternatives now. Even brand new thinkpads, owners complain there isn't enough travel in the keys if you type/write a lot, which I do.
I will probably have to get a desktop and find a corner to set it up somewhere. I know you can get mini desktops but can't see the point particularly if the screen stays in one place!
The one thing I haven't tried is a surface pro. The teenager will be getting that for his birthday/college so I'll get to try it then. It might not be particularly lappable but it does have a small touchpad and the keyboard sits at an angle, which I prefer. Mind you if I had to buy another one it would be getting expensive! They seem well built but I wonder how long they last and not particularly upgradeable. Although at least the ssd can be easily upgraded.
