New Outlook has no settings for spam filter

I have a client whom I was setting up with the New Outlook. Her email inbox is inundated with true spam and some spammy, but legitimate, merchant subscriptions. In order to help sort it out, I was looking to set up the spam filter for her. According to several web sources it is to be found in Settings → Mail → Junk email. There is no such setting in her Outlook:

It's setup from within the app. You should be able to right click on an email and create Filters & Rules for any mail that can be global.

Is this Outlook in Microsoft 365? Or just the Windows Outlook app?

Alternatively, if it's an "Outlook.com" address, it can be done online at the Microsoft account (Outlook.com online)
Or if it's a personal domain "yourdomain.com" in the email spam settings in cPanel or whatever web or webmail interface is available. Catch it before it makes it to the new Outlook.

Of course, that was the point, there is no “Junk email” selection in her case.

Sorry I can't give a direct answer since I do not see what you see. From looking at your screenshot, poke around in message handling and customize actions to see if there is anything relating to 'email rules'. I use outlook classic and it has a "Rules" icon on my toolbar. (I do know that outlook classic is much more intuitive to mojo around in than the new Outlook)

I can also right click on an email message and create a rule so try that.

There is no BLOCK option when creating a rule, but you can set rules by sender email, domain, or subject matter. I have emails sent to me by legitimate advertisers go directly to my deleted folder so I never see them. I have emails with a particular word or phrase in the subject also go to deleted.

By the way, when creating rules, they apply only to the email account in which you are setting the rule. I manage 4 email accounts so it took me a while but I finally got control of my mail. It is also an ongoing process when my email address is sold to some other spammer so if you manage to get her spam under control, she needs to know how to keep it that way.

Hopefully some of the other users here actually use new Outlook and can give you better information.

Why all those sender-specific rules? I thought, spam filters have ways to apply Bayesian rules to determine the likelihood that a message is spam. They assign a spam score and whisk those messages into the Spam folder whose scores is above a certain threshold. I had expected to see settings that reflected that approach.

That is all true... for the emails that your email provider automatically filters as spam on their server and sends to the spam folder (or it may be referred to as junk). Preset filters are put in place by your email provider (MS, Google, yahoo, your ISP, etc) NOT your email application., Depending on the email address you are dealing with, there are additional settings on your provider's email web app. I have a gmail account, an outlook account, and 2 ISP email accounts. Changing filters/rules in those web mail accounts keeps email from reaching the inbox in any email application.

It's only for repeated offenders that make it to my inbox that I have to set a rule within outlook classic.. Am I able to stop all of them? NO. Because many spammers are constantly changing their methods to get around the preset filters one's email provider has in place.

This is exactly why I kept Outlook Classic in Office 2021. I have more control.

Exacatly what is the domain of the email your client is using?

What is going on?
If this is the New Outlook app that's taken over from the old mail app then check the Microsoft Store for updates.
