@Edwin

I think you have to actually GET one of those toast notifications before you see the things you showed us in that pair of shots. Yes?
This machine doesn't produce them, but I do get a notification in the Notification panel above the calendar. I'll try checking that more carefully to see whether I get it.

I got there, but I'm guessing that since my "safe to remove" works, it's not in the list? I do hope this works for @Wisewiz.
Thank you, @Wynona, for that sentiment. It's actually not so big a deal that I'm going to do a repair install to get the banner back. As @Ghot pointed out above, after I click Eject in the balloon, the thumb drive icon disappears, and that means the USB-atttached device is now offline.

What's missing? I can't just create a DWord and give it a value of 1. It has to have a NAME that tells the computer what to do. But I don't have a DWord with any name at all.

I don't know if this will clear the issue as I was getting the toast notification previously.
Went to @Brinks tut,

to reset to default the settings and clear the list of "Notifications from apps and other senders".

I used the registry fix and it cleared it all. Connected a USB drive and once it connected used the safely remove hardware. I still got the toast.
In settings -Notification first on the list was Windows Explorer. It starts populating itself slowly afterwards.

@Fabler2

The thing is, Windows Explorer doesn't show up in any of the relevant lists on this machine. I merged the reg file and rebooted and tried again, but no joy still. I think we should just drop it for now, because Patch Tuesday is just days away, and whatever they throw at us might in fact fix this very minor glitch.

If not, I'm too old and tired to lose any sleep over it. @Ghot's suggestion is completely satisfactory: if the thumb drive icon disappears after you click Eject, all's good.

A note: in File Explorer using Mount can get an .iso file to show as a drive then Eject is used to remove that drive, same thing as doing it with any USB drive and usually with an Optical disc.

I still show that Icon in the systray because Windows 11 thinks my Corsair Monitor is portable, I suppose. I tried a different one once and it went away. I really do not believe it is necessary to use when ejecting a Thumb Drive. I have done it multiple times with no issues.

I've had clients that thought the same way until they got corrupted Thumb drives. It's all about assuring any programs writing to them have completed their process, also saw it happen years ago when popping out a floppy disk before it was done.

Yeah, I agree that the safer way is to right-click the thumb drive icon and click Eject before pulling out the stopper ... errr, connector. A one-second effort to safeguard what might be a very valuable drive. Fortunately, even when you have the (W11 default) "safe removal" setting set, the right-click still brings up the Eject option.

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
If you’re not too worried about it, you can use this portable app as it’s actually more useful. Hotswap works for disk drives to eject as well. It’ll produce the notification you’re looking for too.
