NVME drive what happens to temperature when double speed vs capacity?

And yes, the Original Post states that I own a Gen3 NVME card.

The motherboard supports one Gen4 and one Gen3 slot, so I am interested in the possibility of either Interfaces. Your suggestions are welcome.
The Gen3 card that I own is the remains of my old computer build, which was entirely Gen3. It is all I currently have to go by, when tasked with making any decision. Sorry for any confusion.

OK so, the MB supports both Gens. It is now to determine which one is directly connected to the CPU lanes.
If it's the primary ssd (nvme) and is Gen 4 then, absolutely run a Gen 4 nvme in that slot. The other nvme would
be , I suppose , for storage or the like.

If concerned more about heat and performance, I would suggest you buy a SK Hynix Platinum 2TB.
They are not currently available on Amazon.co .uk but, if you can get one from another source in your
country then, that would be the ideal acquisition for your case. For the other nvme "IF" only for storage,
I would suggest a Solidigm P41 Plus 2 TB. This is still a Gen 4 nvme but, performs very well in a Gen 3
environment. You also get the advantage of their software in which , you can monitor all the drive's heat
and health installed in the PC case.
This is what mine looks like (as I type this comment) in a smallish notebook with a i9 CPU and a 3070Ti GPU:
My main nvme is the 990 Pro and I have never seen it go over 55*C when gaming for a couple of hrs.

It was my mistake for not reading the whole thread.
As for the thermal pads, mine did not have any for the second nvme this is why I suggested the addition
of such.
Now, can you determine for us which nvme would be connected directly to the CPU in order to have better
performance.??

M.2_1 is the one with its lanes provided by the CPU. Gen4.

M.2_2 is from the chipset, and is Gen3.

Well considering that 40*C is 104 F, yes that seems like it's hot but, compared to your CPU which should run at about the same
temp in idle it's not that hot. I haven't seen my 990 Pro go over 55*C while gaming so, well within it's limits. This should apply to most
if not all nvmes. I was playing Sniper Elite 4 this afternoon and thought of taking a screen of the nvme and this is how hot it was while
in game.: That's 111.2 F. This would probably burn your fingers but, normal for nvme.

Thank you for that. I haven't built a PC since the early 2000's because well, Daughter went to Uni and notebooks were the norm.

In a Gen 4 socket operating at Gen 4 speed, the WD_BLACK SN850/SN850X can easily run very hot only if 1/ the case lacks proper ventilation and 2/ there's no heatsink installed on the SSD and 3/ a large amount of data is being transferred continuously over the course of more than several many seconds especially in situations where 4/ other hardware components such as the CPU and/or GPU already are heating up the air that, if the case ventilation could've been a lot better, tends to partially keep circulating inside the case and also your room temp gets rather hot in the summer.

In comparison to the above mentioned WD_BLACKs, the Samsung 980 PRO heats up a tad slower if we can assume that it is installed in a Gen 4 socket and is operating at Gen 4 speed. There also exists a version of the 980 PRO with heatsink, which, for a lot of people, effectively eliminates the need to additionally invest in an aftermarket heatsink (i.e., that they can choose to install on these same WD_BLACK SSDs to keep them from running hot inside their desktop PC that doesn't have enough cooling capacity to run these SSDs decently close to their fullest potential without adding the heatsink). Still assuming a Gen 4 socket @ Gen 4 speed, the 980 PRO does run a tad slower than the SN850/SN850X, but then, there also is the price diffference to be considered, and most people don't actually even need Gen 4 speed anyway in the first place. Both the 980 PRO and the SN850/SN850X are considered to be very durable, reliable choices, but the 980 PRO is insanely popular mainly due to current pricings (it really saves a lot compared to other options).

That said, if operating in a Gen 3 socket @ Gen 3 speed, the 980 PRO runs a little bit more energy efficient than the 970 EVO Plus, and also offers a little bit more sustained write speed than the 970 EVO Plus, and tends to be cheaper priced than the 970 EVO Plus.

As an aside, for Low Power Computing (LPC) you might want to check out the SABRENT Rocket Q4 2230 NVMe 4.0 models (yes, these are 2230 form factor as opposed to 2280, but don't let that fool you...), as these ones have the best energy efficiency vs performance tradeoff AFAIK, but also come with a (lot) higher price tag than the 980 PRO. For the average desktop PC with decent airflow the higher energy efficiency of these particular models from SABRENT would typically be complete overkill, but for very slim ultra-portable devices these models make all the perfect sense in the world because they save the battery and they don't easily run hot in cramped spaces.

There will always be naysayers and fanboys/girls but one should consider a lot of factors when purchasing hardware and not let "brand" be the end all be all for his/her choice. Mark my words, Solidigm will become a mainstream name in storage and give some of the "other guys" a run for their money.

"Hot to touch" is a loosely defined term. A temp monitoring app is clear and precise and leaves no "guesswork".

My NVMe drive is "hot to touch" but my temp monitoring programs (Samsung Magician and ADIA64) says it's only 49 Celsius which equates to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. So, while its "hot to touch", its well within operating limits (70's C)

Yes, I had seen this along side the Samsungs, Western Digitals, et al. I was initially put off by the product name since, to my knowledge, NVMEs work nothing like a "rocket". So I don't share the inspiration. But if, as you say, there temps are good, then maybe I'll give them a second look.

I thought of going for a TForce Cardea or a MSI Spatium, once I am satisfied they answer my question. I am still undecided.

The 1TB Samsung 980 PRO with heatsink was only $69 at the time when I posted about it in that discussion thread. I gave a whole list of other factors, but the fact is she chose to ignore almost every single one of 'em. So yea, it's funny alright... LOL!

According to this video, throttling occurs after 100GB continuous writes, which is going to be quite rare.
