Odd update sequence for both 23H2 and 24H2. Anybody else encounter this?

Although 24H2 has been available for upgrades for a couple of weeks now, my Windows Update wouldn't offer it. I had assumed that my system had something that the Windows Upgrade framework didn't like so until that "problem" was fixed it wouldn't offer it to me. The exact same thing happend when it came time for me to upgrade from 22H2 to 23H2. I decided I wanted it NOW, and forced an upgrade though Windows Installation Assistant much like I had successfully done moving from 22H2 to 23H2. The upgrade process went without incident and 24H2 came up working fine. I routinely ran Windows Cleanup and as expected it purged the old windows installation along with some other garbage I didn't need. I rebooted the system and everything ran fine and the system was stable. All in all, a great upgrade experience.

Now for the interesting part. On a whim, I decided to run windows update to see if maybe there was some new security updates or drivers. Lo & behold, it offered me a full upgrade to 24H2, even through I was already running it. I did a check by running "Winver" and indeed it showed I was running 24H2. I figured I'd go through that process once again and it indeed downloaded 24H2 and reinstalled it. A quick check with Winver showed it was exactly the same build I had been running before. Subsequent Windows update runs showed I was "up to date".

I'm speculating that for some reason, Windows Installation Assistant doesn't set some switch or do something that Windows Update wants to see in the installed baseline, so it wants to offer an update. I remmbered the same thing happened to me upgrading from 22H2 to 23H2.

Has this happend to anyone else? Any speculation on why that happens?

Although 24H2 2033 is installed, Windows Update offers a 2033 update, but it´s not a "full upgrade", it´s just an update. In my case, the update was not offered anymore after several "installations". It shouldn´t happen, of course.

I too had this happen this AM today, I was on 23H2 What's strange is I used our resident aliens tutorial option # 2 ( Specify Target Feature Update Version in Windows 11 Tutorial ) on Sunday Oct 20 because I've read about the problem(s) others have encountered and thought I would wait till the dust settled AND I don't trust Microsoft

After installing Brink's Specify Target Feature Update Version using REG file (24H2) I dutifully did a full Reflect B/U figuring I would be safe. Well not so ... The update installed anyways, took about 10 minutes and all seemed ? to go OK. WIN+R now shows 24H2 26100.2033 Note - On my WIN update settings page I have and always had it set to pause 1 week

SFC scannow and dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /startcomponentcleanup where both clean after update.

I'm not a tech type person - knowing I have a B/U I let it go just to see what it'll do. Other than some cosmetic changes and the addition of co-pilot  I can't find anything yet that would make me want to restore from my Macirum B/U ....... but time will tell.

Just my 2 cents ...............

Probably Microsoft checks some specific characteristics on compliant PCs to see if they are ready for the upgrade. It could also be done by manufacturer and simply your brand wasn't granted the upgrade yet. This would explain why it was not offered in 23H2. After forcing upgrade to 24H2, the requirements were met and it was offered in Windows Update. However since you were already running the same version, it doesn't make sense, unless you were missing some components added after upgrading the second time.
