Ok.. question time.

I plan on installing my new graphic card into my PC this week and I was wondering:

1) I have an APU installed and when I install the graphic card should I connect the monitor to the APU/Motherboard or the graphic card connection? OH and would there be a conflict between the APU and GPU when Win 11 is clean installed???

2) Can I preinstall the drivers for the GPU before I install the card and would that help out when I install the graphic card to avoid any conflicts with the existing APU???
Hardware specs found in My Computer. OS, Win 11 current dev.

1. No, You can use the APU to troubleshoot the graphics card.
2. No, you can't install an GPU drivers (on that card) without the graphics card itself.

Leave the monitor hooked to the APU.
Install the graphics card, and then install the graphics card drivers.
THEN you can hook the monitor to the graphics card.

On a side note... I just fixed an old air conditioner. I had a really old A/C unit that had a bad compressor.
When I got rid of it, I thought, I should probably save the analog controls.
That's what broke on this newer, old air conditioner.
So I removed the control unit and checked the model numbers of the rheostat, and the 7 position rotary switch.
Voila, they were the same, as the really old control unit I had saved.
I just got done switching them out. So now the old A/C unit works again. :)

They were both practically identical Frigidaire units. Gotta love lazy manufacturers. :D

Cool fix.. sorry for the pun. I never put a new card into a PC before, I know or at least understand the process but that's where it ends. In fact, I never actually took any class on how to assemble a PC.. not that really matters with YouTube.

Anyway.. last night after I read this it dawned on me if I did try to install the drivers before the card the drivers would fail during instillation because they wouldn't find the card so that's why they say install the card first. And I bet it wouldn't matter if I put the HDMI into the APU or card connection when install Win 11., but having said that I will use the APU so I have a better chance to debug any issues with the GPU if they crop up.

Basically you helped out a lot and thanks. My brain couldn't handle the hardware addiction

I added a GPU to an Intel Dell PC on 11 a couple of weeks ago, I just installed the card, plugged in the monitor, booted the PC which initially installed the default MS driver then a minute or so later Windows Update installed the Nvidia driver, the latest one without me doing anything, although did have the latest driver available on my Lan which wasn't needed this time.

Thanks.. that's an option. I thought that would happen but I wanted to make sure. Never hurt to ask a question and learn new things.

Depends on how you upgrade to Windows 11.
If you do an In-Place upgrade, you definitely won't have to worry about the graphics card. The In-Place will bring the driver along with it.

You would probably be OK as well, even on a clean install. As @clam1952 says... Windows 10 and 11 are pretty good about supplying the necessary drivers, for anything.



As to the reason the graphic driver won't install without the graphics card... you guessed it. The driver checks for compatible hardware, before it allows you to install it.

I hope that when I install the GPU I don't run into any verification issues with windows due to the new part. I did when I upgraded the APU. But, with the phone verification I did I don't think that will be an issue so Windows will find drivers. I think I'll likely use the APU on the first boot and then install the new drivers, then swap the cables to the GPU after a shut down.

I just have to order the new PSU and I think I can do that tomorrow afternoon/evening. Erin will help me with the job.. she likes to watch me mess with stuff from time to time and I'll have her clean the glass side. Plus I'll make her dinner.. mac/cheese w hotdogs.. homemade mac/cheese, her fav

When you say you upgraded the APU... did you upgrade the motherboard as well?
Generally upgrading just the chip shouldn't involve activation issues.
The video card definitely shouldn't involve activation issues.

I used the same motherboard when I went from the Ryzen 3 2200G to the 3 3200G. Luckily I didn't need a new motherboard. I hope to get paid(pension) tomorrow evening and then I can order a PSU from Best buy and pick it up Wend, It's the same price as Amazon and I can go pick it up. Pizza day and PC part day.,

The cats love pizza.. LOL 🐱

What I would do is:

Download the latest nVidia graphics drivers. (nvidia.com)​

Uninstall the AMD graphics drivers.​
​
Shut down the PC.​
​
Install the graphics card.​
​
Connect the monitor to the graphics card.​
​
Power up.​

What I expect will happen is that the PC will boot up, using the Microsoft Basic display drivers. Then, you should install the nVidia drivers. (You may well get some nVidia drivers through Windows Update. Whether you want them or not.)

I admit that it has been a long time since I owned a CPU with a built-in GPU. I'm pretty sure that this will work, though.

Ok.. thanks. I'll uninstall the driver and go from there.

I got the driver for the card and it supports Win 11.
