Opening From Sleep Issue

Dell XPS 8950 / GTX 1650 Super / Win 11 / 22621

About once a week this computer will come out of sleep display the screen and then go dark. I have to reboot using the power button. This happens maybe 10-20% of the time. What could be causing this?....Thanks.

I don't think that's the problem. I should add that the computer light is on when the screen goes dark...as is the light on the monitor. Power mode is set to balanced.

Please open cmd promt as admin and type powercfg -a
Post a screenshot.

Things to try. Manually put computer to sleep multiple times after each change to see if issue still occurs. I suggest you make an image backup before making changes

1. Turn off any overclocking. Leave power plan set to balanced. .

2. Update graphics driver. I highly suggest you remove the old driver AND its software(Geforce Experience) using DDU. Must be run in safe mode. Read instructions carefully. Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 18.0.6.4
Restart and apply new driver Latest NVIDIA GeForce Graphics Drivers for Windows 11

3. Turn off fast startup. Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 11 Tutorial

Well, that makes complaint # 3,962 concerning problems with "Sleep". It's had bugs, problems and idiosyncrasies since day one. I just don't want to deal with it.

But I have the fix for it. Right after I install any version of windows, (going back many years) I permanently disable sleep and hibernate, and then I never have a problem with either one.

Just don't use Sleep!
There ain't a snowball's chance in hell that MS will ever get Sleep right on 10's of thousands of different devices!

IMO it's as much the manufacturers' fault as it is MS. Their UEFI bios control power and sleep as much as Windows does.That goes for Dell, Hp, etc but also the ones making mobos for DIY builds. They are the ones who agreed to MS crazy plan for instant on and less power usage, so they've designed their UEFI bios to accommodate MS defective plan and to hell with anyone whose sleep doesn't work right with their system's hardware . Just as MS knows about the problem, so do OEMs. Yet, they won't buck MS. Neither one will admit their power plans just do not cut the mustard for everyone.

To @Twangbuster007 If you will post that screenshot I asked for, we can see what sleep state you are using and what other sleep states are available. Since that XPS of yours is a desktop, if it's not already active, there's a chance you can get the old S3 sleep back which solves a lot of problems.
I encourage you to install the latest Dell bios. It worked for me.

You do have S3 sleep. Try the suggestions per post #4 and any others that the other members have suggested..
Also check Dell for an updated UEFI bios.
Have you changed any bios settings that could affect power or is UEFI bios set to Dell default settings?

I'm flying by the seat of my pants here. You did not post what cpu you have so I do not know if you have integrated graphics available along with your GTX 1650. If you do it would be worth a shot to test using integrated graphics with your graphics card disconnected.

Other than that, I know of nothing else to suggest. Hopefully one of the hardware guys can give further suggestions. As others suggested, you can turn off sleep altogether, but that doesn't fix the problem. If the system is still in warranty, contact Dell support and see what they say. But if you do, don't mess around with lower level support. They will lead you around in circles. Demand to speak to a support specialist. Been there. Done that.
