Hi, I've recently updated to Windows 24H2 (coming from 23H2) and I use the middle mouse button to open folders in a new tab, only now, in the 24H2 update those new tabs open in the background instead of the foreground. Is there any way to make the new opened tabs open in the foreground like before? Thanks.

I am not using any browser. This post is about Windows 11 24H2 file explorer behavior.

Try going into explorer options, set to launch each in new instance, verify it opens them in a new instance (separate), then set back to same instances and see if that resets the focus for new tabs

Thanks for the response. I went to file explorer options and checked the box “launch folder windows in a separate process” (I don't know if that's what you meant) but it didn't work.

Correct, that’s what I was referring to. When you did that.. it did not open them in a new window instead of tab?

After activating this option, when I click the middle mouse button on a folder it keeps opening in a tab in the background, I want it to open in a new tab in the foreground.

i'm tracking what you're referring to. it doesnt work on my system (fully up to date 24h2) either. i'm working on scripting something right now to fix this. give me a few.

also for what its worth - dragging a tab from one explorer to another does work on my system, so apparently there are different issues all over the place. but i digress.

Thank you very much for your trouble! I hope the script works! I suspect it may be solved by modifying something in the registry, but I don't know what.

i compiled an exe from autohotkey script. unzip this and run the exe. it will be running in your tray by the clock. so it will send middle click to open the new tab and immediately sent Ctrl+Tab to switch to the new tab.

*1 caveat - it sends Ctrl+Tab ONE time. so if you are on a tab that not immediately to the left of the new tab, it will open that new tab and switch to the next tab in the row. so, say you are on Desktop in the sample image below and open a new tab, it will open that new tab but only switch to Music since that is the next one over. i understand this is not a full solution, but I will keep editing the script to make it function properly and post it when i finish it.

1739678538692.webp

EDIT: *MOSTLY FIXED*

unzip this script (its compiled to exe already). will make middle click opened folder in new tab and will focus on newly opened tab.
*STILL 1 Caveat - does not focus when middle clicking navigation pane folders.

EDIT 2: FIXED
see the currently attached. it will run in your tray and will open new tabs from nav pane or inside a window via middle clicking directory and will focus on newly opened tab.
