win 11
My PC (win 11, 23H2) has started asking me for a password every time I turn it on. I have never set it up with a pw in the first place and it took me several hours and a second PC to get it going. I checked the account settings to turn this nonsense off but couldn't find anything? Can someone enlighten me?

Is that happening at the Windows login screen or before that at the boot screen wanting a password set up in the BIOS? The BIOS usually has 2 optional settings, one for making changes to the BIOS itself and the other for continuing into the OS startup.

so is it working now? you're on with no password? if so, enable the Administrator account, go to Computer Management and set it back to blank. are you just wanting autologin upon boot? or is there another reason you dont have a password set?

It works but it asks me for a password every time I start my PC.
I just want it to start up, as it has done for years. Why would I need a pw? I'm the only one working with it.

Good practice? Idk. But if it’s doing it every boot.. I’m assuming you know the password. Did you accidentally switch from a local acct to your Microsoft acct? Need more details on what was happening just before this started.

Out of a dozen computers I have only one Windows 11 that I accepted the setup with a Microsoft Account [a cheap HP from Dec. '23 but with Microsoft 365] and 2 Linux that require a password. All but that one Windows are set for Local Account with Admin rights.

I seem to have, inadvertently, switched to an MS account, at least that's what the account page says.
How do I get back to my local account?

No, switching from a local account to an MS account doesn't do that. Once an account has been created the profile folder name is fixed, no mater how many times you switch from local to MS account and back. It's only when you set up a PC for the first time and use an MS account that it uses the first 5 characters of your email.

When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.
