Hi folks,

Hope someone can help with this. This is the second of two queries this morning.

For the last few weeks (since Christmas anyhow) my laptop is behaving in a wierd way.

Quite often, although not EVERY time, I hasten to add, when turning my machine back on by pressing the power button, it is like a restart and all the programs and apps that I had open when I close the lid are gone.

This is VERY annoying.

Shutting the lid.webp

Any thoughts / suggestions / fixes?

As I said above, this is the second of two queries this morning, the first appears here

Cheers,

Art

PC is Thinkpad T495s / Win 11 Pro / version 23H2 22631.4890

Turn off hibernation restart your computer and turn back on the hibernation to see it will help.

You can open the Command Prompt as an admin and execute the first command to turn off hibernation and second command to turn on hibernation.

Code:
powercfg.exe /hibernate off

powercfg.exe /hibernate on

Thanks for the suggestions.

It isn't hibernation which is broken per se, it is the fact that virually every time Ii turn my laptop on, all of the open programs - Word, Excel, Notepad and Chrome, EVERYTHING has to be re-loaded. So now, as a matter of course, I have to save everything before shutting the lid just in case!

I'll try your suggestion (and your other suggestion for resetting Windows Search (just clicked on Search and lo and behold, it is working again - the wind must have changed direction as I haven't done anything since my earlier post).

Don't ya just love Windows?!

Can you open eventvwr, and look at the time you booted your pc and when you closed the lid, and make some printscreen of it? (Under Event viewer (local), Windows Logs -> Sytem)

Thanks Tester,

Looked at Event Viewer and there are probably HUNDREDS of entries - many, many from first thing this morning when I opened the lappy and later this morning when I opened it again. Can you give me a hint as to what sort of event i should be looking for?

A small sample below:

At windows Logs -> System.
At 3:02 i shutdown my pc, 11:38 i booted up. Look around the times when you closed the lid, and started again.
Read the message around there to see, if it did shutdown, or you see anything that might stand out. If it did shutdown.

Look at the Messages of source, -> Kernel-Power.

For example for me:
The kernel power manager has initiated a shutdown transition.

Action: Power Action Shutdown Off
Event Code: 0x0
Reason: Kernel API

1740494869976.webp

But it could also be a reboot message.
Also look around those times if update has happend, or any other erors that might relate to the symptoms you had.

Hi, is your fast startup working? I think you may have encountered a similar problem to mine. Fast startup suddenly stopped working for no reason or error and it has been three months now. Everything I have done has not worked and I have updated Windows, drivers and everything. I am really getting frustrated. Every time I shut down the system, it does a full shutdown instead of preparing for fast startup. The strange thing is that there were no programs or updates installed that I could say were the problem and Windows itself disabled it but in the power options it incorrectly shows that it is enabled. Of course, a full reinstall of Windows might solve the problem but I don't plan to do that right now because the rest of Windows functions are fine.

Hmm... not sure about fast startup. I'll update this post with a time when it next boots 'from cold' as it were. as far as simply turning on from hibernation, I'll check that out now and update this post in a few minutes.

Last few turn ons of the machine have been as expected from hibernation, open apps and programs are still open.

Really puzzled as to what is going on with this laptop.

As an aside, two of the F-keys aren't doing what they are supposed to (F5 & F6). F5 does indeed refresh the page but it is also supposed to turn the screen brightness down (which it doesn't do anymore). Similarly, F6 doesn't turn the brightness up. F1 contunues to mute the sound, F2 to decrease the sound and F3 to increase the sound (I don't use F4 - turn mic off). F8 accessess the WiFi settings and F9 the general settings, F10 opens WiFi (Bluetooth) and F11 opens lenovo vantage App. All of these don't require an additional key press - i.e just press f1 to mute the sound immediately. F5 & F6 should alter the screen brightness, but they don't - nor do they in combination with other keys such as Fn, Alt, Ctrl or Shift. This has been going on for a couple of months and I haven't got to the bottom of it yet - I've updated Windows, updated the drivers and BIOS - all to no effect. probably post this as a separate thread on the forum.

Anyhoo, off to test restart time from hibernation. Back in 2...

Restart time is 24 sec (including putting my PIN in)!
