Thanks @OldNavy. I have visited that screen before (from the application) and turned off notifications, and yet the problem persists. In this instance the hidden icon disappeared from the screen, so I'll find out tomorrow if this did the trick.

I am going to ask the stupid question: Have you done the update?
Out of sheer frustration, I did that once and it reported "no updates available"!
And of course, the printer works just great. It was an easy install and performance has been impeccable. Why would I want to break that?
