lol, the pool options:

Unix...
Linux (Linux is actually a flavor of Unix)
Ubantu (Ubuntu is still Linux and also Unix ). To be more exact: Linux is the Kernel - while Debian is the main Operating System (one of the major so called - Linux Distros) - upon which Ubuntu is based.

That being said, Unix is not really a valid choice for a Windows User. Instead of Ubuntu (also Unix) - was enough to add Linux Distribution to the pool - since there's hundreds of flavors - with different package managers and the main major distributions (and i don't mean popular - but the core OS on which others are based upon) at their core. To get a better perspective - he's a timeline with the core distributions and the affiliates (like Ubuntu - the dark orange line from the Debian branch - since it was released only in early 2000), as in:

But hey, if Linux is not enough - and a Windows user really wants to dabble with foreign territory (more foreign than most Linux distributions) - to get a better taste of Unix - of what it means to be a retro-geek (if you will) - FreeBSD is still around (actively maintained too). Honestly, it's the cleanest OS complex yet (highly minimalist) - tho, I would never recommend it to an all time Windows User - who's not experienced with the robust side of Linux (a geek like experience revolving around the Terminal - not this popular user/Windows friendly distributions where the GUI is where it's at - only using the terminal as a workaround an easy fix for some issue).

only companies may do that to pay subs for windows an os completely broken from UI perspective is dam, but if this be a reality than LINUX is the easy way and macos the other....

Honestly, I don't understand all the angst about something that has not happened, and possibly never will.

Our MOON is slowly moving closer to the earth. One day, it will get close enough to destroy the Earth as we know it.
Now, that's something to worry about, if you plan on living forever, not if Windows 12 will cost us more money.
I guarantee, it will never cost me a penny!!!

Personally, I just refuse to worry about it!
There are places on this world, where Windows XP is still run daily. And, there are people right here in FL, that still run Windows 7, and wouldn't have anything else.
Pull the plug, divorce yourself from Microshaft, enjoy what you have, and don't worry about something that has not happened.

If I remember correctly they were sued because the name was to similar to Windows. It had nothing to do with the OS.

The programs I'm referring can work without the internet so if security becomes a problem I would just disable the Wi-Fi. Heck I wouldn't have a problem with MS making us buy new versions of Windows like in the past. For example , make us buy the upgrade to Windows 12, 13, 14 and so on as long as the updates to the Windows versions we are using are free.

So, for me, the $99 for Office 365 is worth it for OneDrive alone. Getting Microsoft Office for me, is just a freebie bonus. And I get a discount on Office 365 via work, so that $99 becomes $69 for the family plan. I'll happily pay that price for what I am getting. I consider it a no-brainer subscription. Others however wouldn't touch paying for Office 365 with a 10ft pole and for them, it may not be worth it.

Thus, at this point, without prices and details, I cannot even speculate on what I might do.

Same here, @pparks1. Mainly I subscribe to Kindle books, which is really inexpensive and Microsoft 365.

A single sub for MS 365 is $69.95, but I can get six for $30.00 more. That will cover my three computers at home and my teaching machine at the Senior Activity Center. And, as you pointed out, I get a terabyte of storage on One Drive for each of those. And . . . I have two subs I can share with family or friends, who can also get 1 terabyte of storage on One Drive.

Can't beat that with a stick!

Maybe Microsoft does spread such a rumour now and then to find out the reaction of consumers on forums like this. And when they see hardly any objections, they decide to change policy. But as far as I read these days on the Internet about MS planning a subscription, there are massive objections against an obliged subscription.

For that reason, such topics like this, with polls, are very useful. MS certainly will read the ElevenForum as it is a main source for information!
