Redhat Enterprise is subscription. None I know of for consumer OS itself.

It’s a new world!

To me, paying a subscription these days is equivalent to paying a company to profit from your data.
In my opinion, it’s like wearing a t-shirt with the brands name on it. Nike, Polo, Playboy, whatever. I am not going to pay top dollar to a company so that I can advertise their brand. I never have and I never will. I don’t pay a company so it can profit off me.

I don't see the logic in it..., perpetually forking over your money only for the privilege of using the software..., it's like paying car insurance and never filing a claim!

I’ve always thought that. But if you seen the photos of what the termites did to my home 2 years ago. They caused AU$130,000 of damage of which the insurance company paid. Also with health insurance, all the years I paid for it, so much money, was basically given back when my heart gave out. So there are some advantages. But regardless, I still agree with you. Our data is worth a lot to companies, and we are freely giving it away… actually more than often paying them to use it.

I've watched it from the beginning and can't wait for the next season.

It's about some of the strange things that happen in that area . . . From skinwalkers (shapeshifters of a sort) to UFOs/UAPs (unidentified aerial phenomena) to underground domes that can't be drilled through.

If you haven't tuned your OS and MySQL instance, running with defaults, this may very well be the case. Default Ubuntu is very slow. But in general MySQL is a lot faster under Linux when tuned right. This applies to many other tasks too. There's a reason why many servers run Linux rather than Windows. One reason is ofc. price, but there are plenty of other reasons too.

There is no way I will pay a subscription for Windows.

I have three PC's. I would immediately start experimenting with some other OS and hopefully continuing to use Win 11 until I sort something out.

Agree with you -- I'm using MariaDB and it's very fast on Arch Linux -- even when I'm running queries from a Windows machine running EXCEL to a remote Linux server. - Of course it also depends on how the database is structured, decent keys, tables, indices, foreign keys etc, the speed of the disk I/O subsystem and what sort of query you are running.

I didn't know that mysql has to be tuned in Linux. I don't know much of Linux. Just how to install it, some settings and that's it
