Printer install fails from Win10 PC (Printer on Win11 connected via USB)

Then I guess I should clarify why I setup my printers the way I do. I don't know if my router even has a WPS button. If it does I don't have easy access to it. It's located under the computer desk in my sons bedroom. At the time when I set it up the room was my my man cave. Plus when I need to access it I have to lie on the floor. With the sciatic nerve problem I have, I have to be careful so I don't get it acting up. When it does it's very painful and I can just barely walk. So for me typing in my passphrase for my router into the printer is the easiest way. Plus there's a possibility that posting how I setup my printer may be helpful for someone who like me can't use WPS when setting up there printer.

I suspect that this is similar to an ongoing issue many people have described elsewhere in the forums, where older versions of Windows cannot see Windows 11 computers, and / or Windows 11 cannot see other versions of Windows on other computers.

Network sharing in Windows, when it works, is decent, but there are quite literally tons of reports where it fails - or works for some time and then abruptly stops working. This is why I suggest going the Wi-Fi route above.

Thanks for suggestions. Not really a problem with Win 11 or Win 10 or older seeing PCs on the Network. I can even see the printer on Win 11 IT JUST WILL NOT CONNECT. I may try WI-FI, but as I said if I will use Fax where will that - on what PC - end up going to? Been busy on weekend and today so will try over next few days. Thanks for BBCOde explanation

Once you select that you immediately go over to your router and press the button on it to start Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) on it. Many routers will flash a light when in WPS mode. Once the printer is connected to the router you install the printer software on each computer. The setup software should automatically find the printer. If not then you can enter its IP address or Host Name that were assigned to the printer.

As mentioned, I have no Ethernet cable from the printer -has USB end, so I'd have to get a converter - too much hassle. Trying WI_FI may be an option I'll see. THANKS

I'm doing the same just in reverse - I have a printer on my network by wired connecting, through a switch, and have laptops on wireless that are able to print effortlessly. Laptops include a Windows 11 laptop, Windows 10 laptop, and an older laptop I've put ChromeOS (Flex) on. Additionally, as I do have a cellphone, I can print directly to the printer from that over Wi-Fi as well.

Interesting; Are you suggesting that there can mixed connection - Wi-FI and wired. Wired as in to the PC or into a router?

THANKS everyone for the suggestions and ideas on connecting this printer to multiple PCs.
This is extremely frustrating as I still hold that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Printer. If I leave my old Win 7, which was the host for the printer, Ican connect to the printer from ANY PC !. This is strictly Win 11 problem. It is beyond my comprehension that one of the most valuable company in the world can screw-up things so royaly - something that worked for many, many years in Home Network environment. It seems that they rather push games (XBOX, etc) where they can suck up money, BUT remove working software from their distribution.

Thanks again, I'll be off for a bit and then I try the WIfi and wired combo.

Yes. The network is the same - the connection media is the only thing that is different. As I mentioned, I do the reverse with no issues.

On the win 11 box:

gpedit.msc > Administrative Templates > Printers > Configure RPC connection settings > Select “RPC over named pipes” from the dropdown

Reboot and then retry connecting to the printer

All right. I tried as you suggested.
1. disconnected USB from Win 11 - primary host for the printer.
2. Enabled Wi-Fi on the printer (connected to hub/router)
3. Installed HP software on Win 10 and connected to HP printer via Wi-Fi - tested, printing fine.
4. Re-plugged the USB to the Win 11 host - wired printer connection. Tested - works fine.
Both are setup for "share". Over time just have to make sure there in no conflict on shred printing to the printer

Keep fingers crossed that noting breaks.

Thank You for this suggestion. I may try (play with this) latter. For now I have USB wired-Wifi combo that seems to work. (unless Microsoft changes something in there next update 24H2 this fall - they like to screw things up, I think)

If the printer is accessible via the network, there is no longer any need for you to share it via Windows at all. Each machine accesses it either directly via USB or directly via Wi-Fi now, as you have it set up. I strongly recommend that you disable printer sharing on both machines.

I also recommend that you set up your existing computer that is using USB to switch to connecting over the network as well, but that is your call.

I've used nothing but network connections for a very long time now, at least 15 years, though I prefer wired, the latest does wired or Wi-Fi. One less thing to plug in directly to my PC - and I already have tons of things connected via USB lol.

So may suggestion in post #17 worked? I know it never failed me and is the only way I now setup my printers.

YES, it works great. I just have to do some testing on couple older O/S's - but they are optional. Also want to test incoming Fax
