Greetings

Does anyone know how to enable system restore in ReFS?
I installed Windows 11 24H2 over ReFS and almost everything works fine, except for system restore which gives me error 0x81000203.
I've already searched the net but I didn't find anything, when I search for system restore errors about ReFS Google takes me to ReFS corruption errors which is not my case.

I tried these solutions and it didn't work, including adding the key to the registry that is on this page you presented.
Someone told me that the issue could be the ReFS file system, I don't know if the information is true, I would like to know if anyone has Windows 11 Pro for Workstations running on ReFs to know if this information is true?

For some registry edits, you need to reboot to apply the changes.
I know the link tells you to restart the computer, but sometimes people just glaze over that.

I followed all the steps described on the page. Including a few restarts, and nothing. What to do? The system was reinstalled twice with the same problem in system restore.

Here's another set of things that might work...

I don't use System restore... ever.
I use 3rd party backup software, which works much better.

You seem to be investing a lot of energy into trying to figure out how to use System Restore ... and I am wondering why?

It does NOT back up the Computer system. It does not back up the Operating system. And, with neither of these backed up, it does not restore either of these as well/

What DOES it do? I would argue -- not much useful.

When you so a Windows Update, those Windows system components that are being updates or removed are copied into something called a Restore Point. If, down the road, you run System Restore and choose this point, it then restores those components. Not the Computer system. Not the Operating system. Instead, only a handful of Windows system components.

Instead, I like many others here, use a backup/restore app know as Macrium Reflect -- with which I can run a complete system image in under two minutes, and a complete restore in half that time. So, I see no use for System Restore.

If your goal is to use something that actually backs up your OS or System and want to restore that, you need to be looking at something other than System Restore.

windows 11 nao funciona sistema de restauracao em refs so no NTFS mesmo nao tem q fazer a nao ser formatar denovo em NTFS que volta a funcionar
Windows 11 does not work, the restore system only works on NTFS, you don't have to do anything other than format it again in NTFS and it will work again.

Hi there

@Ro Wood

@maur0

I know this is Windows - but sometimes other tools can come to the rescue.

It won't restore your system though if the backup was done with some proprietary backup system.

The moral is always after backing up a system --especially one with a new file system try a restore from time to time. With a new file system try a restore immediately after the ist backup. Just because the backup works -job completed --success, doesn't always mean restore will work. If you don't want to test restore to your running system just restore to an external device and just see if you can read it -- it probably won't boot because as its an external device you'd have to re-install the boot manager again and effective create a Windows to go system. However if you can read the files on it then you'll be safe in restoring your image to the internal HDD.

Try DD in Linux.

Boot up ANY Liive Linux Distro-- for Windows users any Linux MINT distro is pretty much like Windows with its GUI -- then in console command mode (open "Terminal") and run dd if=<source disk, partition or file> of=<target disk partition or file> bs=2048M status=progress.

disks or partitions will be /dev/sdx x=a,b,a.. for disks) /dev/sdxn where n=1,2,3, etc for partitions
to see disks / partitions use command lsblk.

for files just use the file names.

The advantage of this method is no disk formatting is required for the target -- linux just reads physical data from the source disk however its organised -- encrypted or not byte for byte whatever the file system. OK as its a byte for byte copy it will take longer but if nothing else works this always does. Note that as its a physical copy any data errors / bad blocks are copied too but that's not usually an issue if the source data is OK. Blank data blocks (hex'20') are copied too - unlike macrium etc which is another reason those proprietary backup systems run much faster- however the object here is to get the job done with a foolproof and failsafe method !!!.

This DOES work for Refs disks !!! even if Linux itself using standard file manager (aka file explorer) can't read the disks other than show a whole lot of garbage.

Here I'm cloning a Windows disk (/dev/sdb) to another disk (/dev/sdc) -- not the fastest but IT DOES WORK.You might be able to speed it up by specifying 4096M in the bs parameter but don't overspecify.

problem with re-installing - even if it fast - you might have loads of applications with their own serial numbers / licenses , configuration files, passwords etc - and it's a real pain to go through all that again.

I agree if only base Windows with say just Office installed then OK I agree but otherwise system restore is still useful.

OK Fine
But suggesting in future what to do. I believe also I mentioned my method wouldn't work if trying to restore from some proprietary backup whether Windows or a 3rd party app.
