Solved PT 2. Windows 11 feels slow considering my specs (21h2)


Alternatively - you could just image the D drive, format it clean - clean install Windows to the C Drive and then reinstall the HDD drive image - if that doesn't work then format the D drive again and reinstall all the programs.

Here's what I "think".

I think MS is trying to convince us that it would be easier to let THEM take care of Windows and just sell us a yearly subscription.
It will make them rich beyond their wildest dreams, and for a lot of folks it will be easier.

It won't be cheap though. Look at "just" Office 365. What's that going for these days? $79-89 / year?
Can you imagine what they'll charge for a whole operating system? An operating system you no longer have any control over.

This is the ONLY method I can see for MS's shenanigans.
They roll out half baked Apps, barely workable updates... and this from a company that's been "doing" Windows for decades now.
You'd think they would be good at it by now. But they "seem" to get worse with every OS.

I don't think they ARE getting worse. I think they're getting a heck of a lot more crafty. :cool:

I would then do

1) Back up Firefox bookmarks and save to Documents
2) Back up all files on a separate external drive - Documents, Pictures, Videos, Desktop, Downloads (ie copy and paste them)
3) Write down any activation codes for programmes (unless they're already in your email) eg Office or other programs purchased
4) Back up Steam online.

5) If you don't want to disconnect all the drives, then reformat them - do the HDD drive/s first by just doing a quick format.
6) Download Windows 11 from Microsoft online, burn to usb
7) Insert USB And select the SSD drive to install to. At install time, format the drive (not 100% necessary but good idea)
8) Let Windows 11 install to the SSD drive. You don't have to disconnect from the internet if you don't want but you'll need a microsoft account to login with to install.
9) When Windows is installed let it do all the Windows updates. Restart when necessary. Wait while all the apps download (check microsoft store, you can see when they've downloaded).
10) Uninstall One Drive (optional) - which you do in Control Panel (type Control panel into search bar and select uninstall a program) - sorry you probably know that bit.
11) When all is up and running and updated, reinstall any programs. Make sure about half the SSD drive is left empty - if it gets too full it will slow everything down.
12) Install most programs to the HDD. Redownload Steam etc - which should have all the game saves saved in it already.
13) Reinstall all Docs, Pics etc files from the external hard drive.
14) There is another step though which I am not entirely sure of - to back up game saves on the HDD before you format them. Depends what kind of gaming programs you use. Steam saves them automatically - not sure about the others.
15) Re-import bookmarks from Documents back to Firefox. Unless you have a Firefox account then you can skip that as they restore automatically once you sign into firefox again. Worth having an account just for that.

As you reinstall programs it will show up if there are any incompatibilities.

Without having ever seen "Waterfox", I'm pretty sure that the path to their temp files would be somewhat different than in Firefox.
But, if you can track them down, then by all means delete them.
So, you tweaked my curiosity, about Waterfox, so I downloaded it, installed it on a test PC, and this is all I could get:

Still, if you can find out where it stores it's 'Temporary Internet Files' ..... delete them.

PS: Now it's five different drives on two different computers. No matter what I do, Waterfox installs but refuses to run. Arggg!
I'm so glad that I don't really NEED that program.

EEK I would change to linux but I find it too clumsy and I paid £120 for windows..... smh

What I would like to do
  1. Clean install windows 10/11 what do you think?
  2. Use revo installer get rid of the awful microsoft "services"
  3. Install next to no software if not required
  4. Install ALL software on D drive.
  5. Have a fast experience :D
What I would NOT like to do
  1. Format my D drive. It's got 600+gb data on it including these games. Although - actually maybe I should. I am arguing with myself right now. Do I do it?
  2. Have to do sys images etc to external hard drive/ usb. Just too much faf.
  3. Detach hard drive on install

So will this guarantee me a good performance as a result? Or do I need to do the ENTIRE thing???? Thanks!

This! I do know that MS Security can slow down the system and even make it lag. I just completely disabled MS Antimalware and Security Services. I keep the Firewall on, due to the fact that I can't download MS Store apps without it, which is stupid.

I wouldn't format the D drive. . You shouldn't have to do that. I have a 3TB drive with a bunch of TV Shows, Movies, Software, etc. . . You could perform a clean install of windows, but disconnect the D drive from the MB before you do it. I always disconnect my drives before doing a clean install, even with my new M.2 Drive that I got a couple of weeks ago, I done it.

In what way does this help? I’ll have to mess around with the sata cables which I can manage doing but I feel like this is to further extents

I hope this is the right place to put this....
Since I've been totally unable to install "Waterfox" on any of my PC's, so I could find the Path to it's browsing Cache, I did the next best thing, and went on-line for information about clearing that 'Cache' and here's the link to that site.

You do not need to format D drive to install second instance of Windows.

All you need to do is either shrink existing partition and create new one, or easier still create a virtual hard drive on D drive and install to that

Re. performance, if D drive is an hdd, it will be pretty crap anyway.

Secondly, disabling services will have minimal impact. Days when this helped died out years ago.

I do not know where you get idea not installing software will help speed up pc (maybe a bit if using originally a fragmented hdd).

You will get a much bigger performance boost if D drive is ssd.

Your expectations do not really match reality.

Maybe I should purchase a 1tb ssd to replace the HDD?

or.. What if I bought a say 500gb ssd, put all programs, games etc on there, and then the (only around) 130gb remaining can go on the 1TB HDD, which would be Videos, music etc. how does that sound?


I have bought a 120gb Kingston ssd in the past (for the same price!) so I know the brand.

It is a bit of a false economy buying a 500 GB device - you will soon fill it up. In the end, your decision.

I will ONLY put games and programs on there, my 1tb HDD for all else. (And use the 256gb nvme for os, and that’s it). Maybe I would go for another nvme 500gb since my motherboard fits 3 nvmes

I would then do

1) Back up Firefox bookmarks and save to Documents
2) Back up all files on a separate external drive - Documents, Pictures, Videos, Desktop, Downloads (ie copy and paste them)
3) Write down any activation codes for programmes (unless they're already in your email) eg Office or other programs purchased
4) Back up Steam online.

5) If you don't want to disconnect all the drives, then reformat them - do the HDD drive/s first by just doing a quick format.
6) Download Windows 11 from Microsoft online, burn to usb
7) Insert USB And select the SSD drive to install to. At install time, format the drive (not 100% necessary but good idea)
8) Let Windows 11 install to the SSD drive. You don't have to disconnect from the internet if you don't want but you'll need a microsoft account to login with to install.
9) When Windows is installed let it do all the Windows updates. Restart when necessary. Wait while all the apps download (check microsoft store, you can see when they've downloaded).
10) Uninstall One Drive (optional) - which you do in Control Panel (type Control panel into search bar and select uninstall a program) - sorry you probably know that bit.
11) When all is up and running and updated, reinstall any programs. Make sure about half the SSD drive is left empty - if it gets too full it will slow everything down.
12) Install most programs to the HDD. Redownload Steam etc - which should have all the game saves saved in it already.
13) Reinstall all Docs, Pics etc files from the external hard drive.
14) There is another step though which I am not entirely sure of - to back up game saves on the HDD before you format them. Depends what kind of gaming programs you use. Steam saves them automatically - not sure about the others.
15) Re-import bookmarks from Documents back to Firefox. Unless you have a Firefox account then you can skip that as they restore automatically once you sign into firefox again. Worth having an account just for that.

As you reinstall programs it will show up if there are any incompatibilities.
