I've been using Rainmeter for some time now to add a simple transparent background clock with date to the Desktop. Lots of designs are available if wanting a more elaborate one.
The appearance of the clock relies on an ini file. This can be used to customise appearance further if wanted. The one shown was downloaded as a 24 hour clock and changed to a 12 hour one by modifying the ini file. Text sizes also altered to preference.
