Questions about upgrading CPU

On my desktop I want to upgrade the CPU from an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X to an AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D. Are there any problems with that?

For example, what about the CPU? Would another CPU be better for occasional gaming? Also, is the CPU cooler good enough? What about noise?

BTW, most of the computer components are 3-8 years old. The only new components are the motherboard and CPU cooler. I replaced the Corsair H60 AIO water cooler because I was concerned because of its age. It had been used since early 2017.

If both processors use the same board socket such as AM4 socket the processor should work. I have the AMD Ryzen 7 5700G processor with stock cooler and haven't had any thermal problems.

The 5700X3D is a pretty good gaming CPU so don't let that bother you. I would ensure you have a current bios that supports it before installing it.

The Ryzen 7 5700X3D is on it. (Requires BIOS 2803 or newer. Upgrade the BIOS before upgrading the CPU, if you haven't kept current.) That seems to be the highest-end CPU on the list with the X3D cache.

The 3700X has a PPT of 88W, while the 5700X3D is 142W. I'd guess that the Mugen 6 is adequate for the 5700X3D. It probably wouldn't benefit much from a second fan.

The original motherboard was an ASUS Prime X370-Pro. I bought it with a Ryzen 7 1700X at Ryzen launch in March 2017.

According to the ASUS support site the ASUS Prime X370-Pro is supposed to be compatible with a Ryzen 7 5700X3D but I thought the ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming WiFi II motherboard would work better with this CPU.

BTW, when the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU was launched I checked Amazon and saw that they made it available for sale about two hours before they had said they were going to. I actually bought it then for the MSRP of $479. I came to my senses and canceled the order five minutes later. I realized that I would need to totally rebuild my computer if it was to be worthwhile. I just wasn't ready to do that. Maybe I should have kept it because that is the only time I actually saw it in stock. Now the scalpers are wanting $650-$700 for it.

Go for it if you can. I recently upgraded my processor to a 16 core XEON and am well happy with it, whatever i am doing the core machine is basically idling at 2% and memory barely touched.

I only got the new motherboard three weeks ago. It came with BIOS 2806 (2022/12/02). I upgraded that to BIOS 3611 (2024/11/04).

At idle the CPU temperature is about 50C. If I were to get the 5700X3D I am concerned that the temperature might be a lot higher. Of course that is only relative to the room temperature which I keep higher than many people do (24C). Some people might want to solve that by lowering the room temperature to something like 18C. That is just a little too cool for me.

Yes I do. I thought of buying the 9800X3D CPU. That would have required buying an AM5 motherboard and RAM. I changed my mind and decided to stick with AM4. That is why I bought the B550-F motherboard.

The B550-F motherboard also has a 2.5Gbps Ethernet port. This is nice since I have 2Gbps Internet. With the old motherboard the download speed was about 920Mbps. Now it is about 2300Mbps.

Make sure to get a better cooler than what you have to address your temp concern. The inside of your case is much warmer than your room so there's a very little effect from room temp. What you need is air circulation making sure the air in your room is circulating.

I have the 5700 x3d. Awesome cpu. Very fast. The box says on it that it recommends water cooling. I got this one:

Works great, low temps. I am at 28c idle. No need to do any maintenance.

50C at idle seems a little high, even for a 24C (75F) room temperature. Maybe the fan speed is optimized for silence rather than cooling?

It sounds a little dicey for swapping in a higher-powered CPU.

I've used all-in-one water coolers for the past few years. I liked the space around the CPU socket. However, I pretty much have to use a water cooler with my current 350W CPU.

My case supports the following radiators in the front: 120mm, 140mm, 240mm, 280mm.
However, to do that I have to remove the drive cages in the front of the case. I have an optical drive mounted there. If I do this I will relocate that drive to another computer.

My case also supports the following radiators in the back: 120mm, 140mm. I used to have a Corsair H60 (120mm) AIO cooler in this computer. Are there any other rear mounted AIO coolers that would be enough to cool the 5700X3D CPU?

BTW, the Mugen 6 is the first large air cooler I have ever used. It is quite restricting to have it in there compared to having an AIO.

I don't have a Cooler Master MasterCase 5.

If I understand this review, it would also be possible to fit a radiator in the top of the case, but you'd need to get the accessory top mesh.

It's unclear to me whether there's be interference with an optical drive, though. With a 240mm or 280mm radiator.

I don't have my 5700X3D to test as I put it in one of my granddaughters system for her to game on. I do have an X570 motherboard using the 5800X cpu. Using the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Black Edition to cool it. Running Cinebench R23 it gets up to the high 80s. And that is more demanding than any game. My thought is your overthinking the cooling requirement for the 5700X3D. It simply doesn't need water when a cheap Hyper 212 BE cooler will suffice. IMO

TBH, your Mugen 6 should be able to handle the new CPU. Maybe switch to a better thermal paste? and add more fans to your case?

The Mugen 6 and the Coolermaster Hyper 212 appear to have similar performances. (See the 175W Cinebench results.)

The benchmark also shows that a Mugen 6 should be more than adequate for a 5700X3D.

I still guess that "MisterEd" needs some more fan RPMs at idle.

Yeah, i'm running a 5900x with a BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4. I have the box setup for quiet operation, and that cooler keeps my CPU in the low 30's at idle (about 34). I run a Fractal Meshify S2 case, with the stock 2 x 140mm's on the intake in the front and a 1 x 140 external exhaust out the back.

I would think the Mugen 6 would be more than enough for a 5800x3d.

Currently the Mugen 6 has Noctua NT-H2 thermal paste. The case has one front 140mm fan (input) and one top 140mm fan (output). I do need to recheck the direction of airflow to make sure of that.
