Random desktop pausing, New Win11 build

I upgraded to a new AM5 CPU and motherboard. Now, randomly everything will pause for about a second, every 5 seconds or so.

When I look at task manager, the CPU usage is very low.

I've not seen it stop on it's own once it starts. A reboot fixes it every time so far and logging out and back in worked once.

As best I can tell it only starts after putting the PC in sleep mode or the displays going into power save mode after 10 minutes. It's not happening every time but so far it's only after sleep or when the displays are powered off by the power plan.

The main reasons this could happen are incorrect video drivers or corrupted system files. First check your video drivers out (let me know if you need assistence doing so- do you have a dedicated GPU?), and if this doesn't work you can reset windows. Follow this tutorial: Refresh Windows 10

Make sure to follow the advice to keep everything. This is refreshing. (This tutorial is for windows 10, but just make sure download windows 11 setup iso instead. FYI, there is a windows 11 version of this tutorial but does not describe the refreshing process which keeps everything.

Note: this will KEEP all apps, data and settings.

I have a RTX 4090 and it's had a few driver updates. The old setup and this new one are both clean Win11 installs I did not image them over. I have two different SSDs for a work and home Win11 install. They both have this issue.

This CPU has an iGPU that I did try out during setup before moving the RTX 4090 over and I wonder if that is the issue. There are no AMD drivers installed and I think I have the iGPU disabled but am going to check.

The iGPU BIOS settings are not straight-forward and there are more then one. I think it's off now and will have to wait and see if the issue is still there.

It's still in the device manager as an unknown PCI device. As is the on board audio that I also disabled in the BIOS. I'd have thought they would just not be seen by Windows at all.

It did not help. The work SSDs did it again today after lunch today. Not sleep mode, just the monitors going into power save. I guess I'll try the Windows reset if there is no other known issue. I'll be surprised as these are two new clean install already and they have had the issue from the time I did the clean install.

I'm not totally sure yet but updating the BIOS and uninstalling the AMD chipset drivers and then installing the newest ones that just came out seems to have helped. The displays have gone into power save two times now and not had the random 1 second pauses.

I'm hoping I have my issue fixed but does it keep everything or not?

  • Removes apps and drivers you installed.
  • Removes changes you made to settings.
  • Restores any apps your PC manufacturer installed if your PC came with Windows 11.

You do not keep everything when resetting Windows 11. The "Keep my files" option basically only keeps your accounts and their "C:\Users" folders. Everything else is removed.

To keep everything, you could try a repair install below instead.

I've run the above but It seems it's something Windows related but not sure what and I feel that is not file corruption or anything like that.

I just came from a AM4 5950X setup that I had just gotten 2 new SSDs for. I had used that setup for over 2 years without seeing this pausing after only the displays powering off by the Power Plan Settings.

I got a new AM5 MB with an 7950X3D and new RAM but the same RTX 4090 and same 2 SSDs and all the same USB peripherals. Keyboard, mouse, USB hubs and so on, are all the same. I did not image the SSDs but formatted them and installed a clean Win11 install from the latest Win11 install from a USB drive.

One SSD is for work and just has MS Office, VMware Workstation and some VPN software. The other is for personal use, VMware Workstation but no Office software and a few gaming apps. Both installs have the issue but it's random. When I try to make it do it by setting the display power off time to a minute I've not had any luck. About half the time when I take a lunch break and wake up the displays it will have this issue.

I've disable fast start and turned off the PC sleep mode. It makes me think it's something built into the new MB like the USB Hub, NIC or sound card.
