They have usb dvd/cd players on Amazon for around $25 bucks, but I’m guessing you are wanting to install the player in your case?

You could always ask a friend, but DVD players are so cheap these days, even USB ones. However, never hurts to have another way to add more drives. Can’t have enough drives in my opinion 🙏
Scannerman was telling me about some, he has 325 drives 😄 (kidding)
Can’t find where he recommended one to me. Grab a name brand, Jmicron are apparently good.

If you want to go crazy, go 10 ports 😃

I always start with the worst reviews.

Scannerman will guide you right, when he is around.

Scannerman, I believe this is your domain?
I apologize for my tardiness. I was at a graduation video recording speeches etc. I highly recommend using an onboard SATA port for your blue ray player because of potential firmware issues. I don't know if Blueray is as picky as they used to be but it has been my experience that this is the best approach. If you still need SATA connectivity there are cards that can provide that for you easily. I would need more specifics in that regard as to what the ports will be used for. If more ports are merely required for storage the world is your oyster.

I own too many laptops: A Dell touch screen with Windows 11 and 6 others (not counting the other four laptops I bought for this household.) Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. The Asus Rog Crosshair VIII has 8 SATA ports. I'm impressed that you've run out.

I haven't used a PCI-E to SATA add-in-card. Maybe Startech is reliable.

I add my recommendation to get an external USB BluRay drive instead. You can continue using that long after you've gotten a new PC case that has no external slot for an optical drive.

If any of the BluRay movies are 4k, that may add a layer of complexity. I have an LG drive (internal, in an external enclosure) with an old firmware that permits it to read 4k movie disks. I believe that there are work-arounds that don't require that. (MakeMKV.)

Bobkn, I do have too many drives, it’s an affliction for sure.
As the price drops perhaps I go to less drives but bigger.

I have an old LG Blu-ray player/writer from 2014 in my PC, cause I have an old PC, but I’ve never even used it to burn or rip anything, just watch some old movies I have. I hope they’ve gotten better, because mine is a slow as molasses on a 20° day starting up, but once it gets going, it’s ok.

For storage I find the Avago/Broadcom/LSI cards to be among the most reliable. There is a certain method to the madness of having two dozen drives in your PC — even large drives. If you're archiving, mirroring some of those drives can be particularly handy as rarely do all drives fail at the same time. By mirroring your storage you can ensure that you will always have your data intact. Having multiple back ups also provides added insurance. Port multiplier cards work in a pinch but are not always reliable. Should you decide to mirror your storage be sure that you are using a RAID card. Jmicron is good for older systems if you're using a Marvel controller but for newer systems it wouldn't be my first choice. Avoid cheap Chinese hacker cracker combos. StarTech is generally reliable for SATA expansion.

If all you want is storage expansion I've had good results with these: eSATA plus SATA They work well but be very gentle with the SATA ports as they can go brittle over time on this model.

But if you're into some serious expansion without losing stability or speed you might want to consider one of these: Star Tech Big Boy

Feel free to ask me here or pm me if you have any additional questions. :-)
