i have been looking around for some time and i DO run seperate PCIe power cables to my 7900XT, i had the wires so i thought ide use them and IMO dual wire looks more like a UNIT of power but i have gone from a full tower to a smaller one and i am still using twin wires but its causing one hell of a blulge on the side, i was wondering if i could actualty Daisy it, if its not recomened ill just live with the bulge

GPU - RX7900XT Sapphire Pulse
PSU- 850w THOR ROG

no overclocking done except a undervolt on my CPU

Do you use the card for gaming? In my opinion, two separate cables if the GPU is under heavy load, if not, a ”pigtail” should be fine. Still, a GPU over 225W it’s best to use an individual power cable per connector.

I personally wouldn’t. I mean I’d use two.

Also, it’s up to you really but for future reference; please type “Winver” into search on your PC and open it. Please type the version and build that it reports (you can copy/paste), into your “System Specs / OS” section (first on the list where you have placed “Windows 11 (StartAllBack)” which isn’t a version of Windows.

Like this for example: Windows 11 Pro 23H2 Build 22631.3374

This link will open your System Specs.

Here’s the difference; You have a greater chance of the cables overheating and possibly shorting your GPU if you use a pigtail. Or daisy chain. To me a daisy chain is where you join two cables together end to end but I doubt you mean that.

Like I said, this is just my opinion but how important is a bulge compared to shorting out hardware?

i can live with it but i mainly wanted to know if it was safe to use one cable on this UNIT of a card, personaly i didnt think it would be a good idea so thought i would ask people who know alot more than i do, im better at XP and backwards in hardware, i normally have Mid to low so this is new to me

I’m just backwards /end

Always good to get other members opinions. Also, this may of been better in DIY builds, I am sure if it’s an issue, admin will move it.
Take care of your system, Toasty, anything else is a bust in your budget 🙏

P.S. Remember, a short to your GPU could “daisychain” a short to other componants of your PC.. CPU, Motherboard. Who knows?

The card is spec'd at 331W. PULSE AMD Radeon™ RX 7900 XT 20GB

It usually is recommended to use separate PCI-E power cables rather than using two connectors on a single cable. (That begs the question as to why PSU makers provide PCI-E cables with two connectors.)

You can make thing tidier if you can provide cables with single connectors. You might have to resort to third-party cables (CableMod, for example). It's only money. :(

It's a widely debated topic. I think most people agree that if you have 2 physical cables from your power supply, that's the best option. That would ensure that you can get 150w down each cable directly, so 300w from the cables and the other 75w from the PCIe slot itself in the motherboard.

From a technical perspective, the pigtails 'can' work. As long as the power supply can push 300w out the single connector on the back, and as long as the cable itself is of adequate thickness (guage) to handle the 300w of power, it will work. But there are a couple of "if's" in that statement.

On my EVGA 3080 FTW3 Ultra, I have 3 x 8 pin power connectors. My manual said to run dedicated power to #1, and dedicated power to #2. But if dedicated power was not available for #3, it was okay to use the pigtail from 2 to 3. So, that's what I have done. Haven't had a lick of trouble with it.

I wanted to get a single sleeved cable to plug into my GPU and then connect to my power supply behind the mobo, but I never got around to it. It would have made the install a bit tidier and aesthetically pleasing. But it felt like just spending money for the sake of spending money, so I never did it. I don't really look inside my case anyway, it's hidden away.

This depends upon the card. My EVGA said you could do this no problem, and it said to use the pigtail on the plug closest to the end of the card.
1715048871942.png

I'm also running it on a seasonic power supply with pretty beefy cables. And I have undervolted my 3080 slightly, so it doesn't draw as much power as it could.

I just spent 40min reading and looking at videos specifically for the 7900XT. What I found common with everything I looked at:

The PSU for the 7900XT should be at least 750w
It is recommended or even in some instances stated, not to daisy-chain (or pigtail, whatever) and to use separate cables for the power.

I used the search term “power supply connection to the 7900XT”

That's one hell of a PSU! j/k, we know you meant 750 W
Bahaha… I can afford a $1000 a week power bill?

Thank you. Corrected 7500w to 750w

the spec on the AMD web site says that typical board power is 315W so I personally would use 2 cables. Less chance of melting the psu connector do to variation in the pins and their receptacles at the psu which results in resistance = heat.
