regarding laptop charging

"I would like to know how can i make my laptop only start charging when the battery percentage hits 90% or below..?"

Not necessary to do that. Depends on the Laptop, some have a charge to 80% setting rather than 100%, but that has never been proven to be of any value.

"I would like to know is it safe to use laptop on power supply all the time(even when battery is at 100%)?"
"Because when you purchase it, they will on it to do the testing and setup.. And the laptop may not be at full battery life at that time. For my first charge, i actually use it while it is charging at the same time. Isit still fine?"

"I recall the laptop i purchase was at 30%+. I went home start charging and use it at the same time. Isit fine?"

Yes, no worries. It stops charging at 100% anyway, it will not overcharge.
Obviously you plug it in when you have just bought it to ensure there is sufficient power during the OOBE setup.

A point I would add is to use standard charging generally rather than "fast charge" as the fast charge does increase the battery temperature a lot more.

The other information is out of date, devoid of facts, just a nonsense mishmash from various battery types some of which are no longer available or not used in Laptops.

I limit the charge level on my new Dell to 85% and to commence charge at 60%. Dell say:

Extends battery life by lowering the charge threshold, so that the battery never charges to 100 percent capacity. Recommended for users who primarily operate the computer while plugged into an external power source.

The above is an extract from Dell's Power Management user manual.

The charge points can also be set in the BIOS on the Dell meaning you do not need to install the Power Manager App.

Coincidently I just got a new battery (from Duracell Direct) for my 2012 Dell as the original battery in that is probably only giving around 30 to 40% of the original run time. The instructions with the replacement say to 100% charge and then fully discharge for a couple of cycles and then to NOT fully discharge after that except occasionally after at least 30 charge cycles. Also mentioned is that 40% is the recommended long term storage value and that even then the battery should be used every month or so.

Dell Tech Support produced this short video about batteries & charging. Whilst they were addressing Dell customers, Dell never makes any claims about possessing unique battery technology so their statements can be regarded as being fairly generally applicable.
Facts about your Laptop Battery - Dell Community
I thought the most interesting facts were:-
  • That leaving the computer plugged in after the battery was fully charged has no detrimental effect on battery run-time or overall battery life
  • Charging the battery to 100% whenever possible has no detrimental effect on overall battery life
  • Charging the battery to 100% even if it has only been partially used [as opposed to always using every drop it has left in it before charging] has no detrimental effect on overall battery life

If only computer makers would post the data upon which their conclusions & recommendations were based.

I've watched the video and they also say that unplugging the cable when battery is 100% is not necessary because there is an "integrated control" which stops charging.

Thus it logically follows then if there is no harm to leave battery charging then there is also no need for "integrated control".
In layman's words, therefore, leaving battery charging is harmful if the battery does not have an integrated control

I have always treated laptops in the same way that I have servers or desktops which are powered from an uninterruptable Power Supply [UPS}. I simply plug them into the mains and use them - over the years I have dealt with Hundreds if not thousands of laptops, Personal, company and client systems and have not seen any serious issues.

I always prefer to have some form of protection built into the laptop to monitor and to "parachute" the power down before the battery is completely exhausted, when mains power is not available, this is usually a standard feature of decent laptops but if not can be managed within windows

OK, it could be I'm wrong, my statements primarily come from instructions which I got with laptops, almost all manuals I got with laptops state you need to fully charge the battery on first (or prior first) use.

Also there are obviously contradicting claims from laptop manufacturers we can find online regarding battery charging.
In any case I'm not convinced it's safe to stop charging before battery reaches 100% or to use it before it's fully charged on first use.

I use my laptop without fully charge it after buying. Will that cause any problem later?

People has been saying that the battery has been charged before given to the shop for sales. So why do we still need to charge it for so many hours before first use..
