Remote Desktop - Login Failed

Windows 11
I am running Windows 11 Version 22H2 Build 22621.1992 on a brand new Windows 11 desktop computer that is only (2) days old and I'm having difficulty connecting to the computer with Remote Desktop. When I attempt to connect with Remote Desktop, I get a "Login Failed" message. Here's some background:
  • I am attempting to connect to the W11 desktop from a laptop that also runs W11.
  • Using that same laptop, I am able to successfully login to a similar W11 desktop computer using the same login credentials.
I think I have found the solution, but I'm not sure how to do it. I found a solution on the web that says that you have to turn off Windows Hello and force the computer to login with a password instead of a pin. Once you've done that once, you should be able to connect with RDP and as soon as you've connected once with RDP, you can then turn on Windows Hello and go back to logging in with a pin.

I have turned off Windows Hello but every time I login, it asks for a pin (not a password). How do I force it to require a password instead of a pin on login?

I found a solution on the web that says that you have to turn off Windows Hello and force the computer to login with a password instead of a pin.
That info it wrong!

First make sure Remote Desktop is allowed through your firewall on both PCs...
2023-08-05_02-38-04.png

Next make sure the PC you're connecting to has "Allow remote connections to this computer" enabled. You might also tick the box below as shown in my image...
Remote Connections.png

You also need to use the same credentials used to log into the system. That means if you use your Microsoft Account credentials (MS account email address and password) - NOT pin. that is what you'll need to remote into the PC. No issues here, and I use Remote Access (login) a lot. Zero need to disable Windows Hello ;-)

See this tutorial/video by Kari - RDC - Connect Remotely to your Windows 10 PC to properly setup and use Remote Desktop. However, what I posted above should be enough to get you going.

@glasskuter, FYI the link posted is not applicable to the OPs issue. They're trying to log into the machine with a pin, which is not applicable. They will need a password, not pin.

@glasskuter, to clarify, you can still use Windows Hello - pin, biometrics to log into Windows as you'd normally do, but for "Remote Desktop" login to a PC setup with a Microsoft Account, you will need those credentials to remote in. This does NOT require Windows Hello to be disabled. That's why the link isn't applicable here. Hope this clarifies :-)

I'm an experienced Remote Desktop user. I've been using it for years and I've done everything suggested to enable Remote Desktop and I am using the same credentials that I normally use for local login. Those are all very basic things. This problem is beyond that.

I got this to work. The problem was exactly as I thought it was. I needed to login locally with my password (instead of PIN) to get it to work Here's what I did:
  • When I attempted to do a local login, I selected "Forgot PIN"
  • I then selected "Login with Password"
  • I logged in with my password (rather than PIN)
  • i reset my PIN to what it was before
After that, I was able to get Remote Desktop to work. This is probably some kind of bug in Windows 11.

With all due respect when you make statements like this, this clearly says you are NOT an experienced user....

You do NOT!!! need to disable Windows Hello, nor did you ever need to do so. I too have been using Remote Desktop for years. The only bug is the end user. At any rate you figured it out.

Peace

The question for these who has no problems, do you have the same exact login on both of the computers? If so, that probably would explain why it works for you. I use a local account on computer1 and ms account on computer2, on both computers I've enabled windows hello with a pin.
And for the life of me, I'm unable to login from computer1 to computer2 using the ms account and correct password. All I'm getting is "Your credentials did not work" "The logon attempt failed"
I'm using myname@hotmail.com as username and correct password which works fine when I sign in at live.com

Please read the following to see if this helps you. Having the same email credentials makes no difference, or has no advantage to being able to connect.

Thank you! I have been struggling with the same issue, and it turns out your solution worked for me too.

I selected "Forgot PIN" on the local/host computer, logged in with my Microsoft password rather than the pin, and "reset" my PIN to the same one it had been. Then I was able to log into this computer using Remote Desktop and my Microsoft credentials. Definitely seems like a bug in Windows 11.
