General Replace, Skip, or Keep Both Files in File Name Conflict Dialog in Windows 11

File_Transfer_dialog_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to replace, skip, or keep both file versions being copied or moved in a file name conflict dialog box for your account in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

When you copy or move files/folders from one location to another in Windows and the destination has files with the same names, you will get a file name conflict dialog that allows you to either replace all file name conflicts in the destination location, skip copy/move all file name conflicts to the destination location, or copy/move and keep both versions of files in the destination location.

Starting with Windows 11 build 26080 (Canary and Dev), when extracting files, if there is a file name conflict you can now choose to apply your selected action (skip, replace) for all conflicts by checking Do this for all conflicts in the dialog.

Here's How:

1 Perform one of the following actions you want when you get a file name conflict at the copy or move destination: (see screenshots below)
  • Click/tap on Replace the file in the destination or Replace the files in the destination to replace all files with the same name in the destination location with file versions from the source location.
  • Click/tap on Skip this file or Skip these files to not copy/move files with the same name from source location to the destination location.
  • Click/tap on Compare info for both files or Let me decide for each file to manually select which files to replace, skip, or keep both versions in the destination location.

2 If you selected Compare info for both files or Let me decide for each file, then perform the actions below for which files you want to keep in the destination: (see screenshots below)

If you select to keep both source and destination file versions, the copied/moved files from the source with the same name will have a number added to its name in the destination location.

  • Check or uncheck Skip # file(s) with the same date and size (if available) to not copy/move files with the same name, date, and size from the source to the destination.
  • Check or uncheck Files from <source> at the top to toggle check/uncheck keep all file versions from source location to destination location.
  • Check or uncheck Files already in <destination> at the top to toggle check/uncheck keep all file versions in destination location.
  • Check or uncheck any file versions from source location (left side) you want to keep when copy/move to destination location.
  • Check or uncheck any file versions in destination location (right side) you want to keep in destination location.

When I drag & drop an image file from Firefox, Chrome, Edge or Pale Moon web browser to an Explorer folder that has a file with exactly the same name, I don't have the options Compare info for both files or Let me decide for each file.

I would like to keep both files. Is there any way to fix this? It is very time-consuming to rename the existing file before drag and drop every time...

Hi Cyanna,

Yes, if you check both files then they both will be saved except one of the duplicate file names will have a one after it.

Kind regards,

tecknot

P.S. It states that in the conflict dialog box.
