Should I use a standard account for every day and have a separate Admin account?

Do you use an admin and a standard account?

  • Yes, I have both

  • No, I only have an admin account

  • Other, because there's always one!

Results are only viewable after voting.
I've always ran 2 user accounts since Windows 8 days, standard user for daily tasks, and Admin user for maintenance tasks and system administration

In XP days badly infected old system vowed never ever again after that
Yeah, XP had its fair share of problems but it sure was a vast improvement over ME.

I never argued that Win XP was better than Win 7 even though it was well known that XP held the record for stability. When I first used Win 7 I was blown away and I really liked Aero. The only thing that annoyed me about Win 7 was the fussing with drivers but then I had to do that with XP too so by then I was growing quite used to it. I used to get a lot of blue screens with Win XP despite its reputation for stability. I'm thinking this was probably because I was getting heavier into PC building back then and trying out a lot of different hardware. By the time Windows 7 rolled out I was well-seasoned and accustomed to mucking about with drivers. Still, that was the most annoying part of it. There are few who wouldn't agree that Windows 8 was an utter disaster. I'm referring to Windows 8 — not Win 8.1, which is more removed from Windows 8 than Windows 7 is removed from Windows PITA, I mean, VISTA. Anyway, I've seen the arguments and I understand the trend. I'm still waiting to see Windows come out with an OS that impressed me as much as Windows 7 did.

That's why I use a lot of customizations to make Windows 11 look as close as possible to Windows 7. The only thing I haven't seen done properly is 3D aero buttons. I don't care much about transparency.

@pseymour, I looked for your vote and didn't find it.
Yeah I voted on my work laptop, not sure why it's not showing now. I voted that I use separate accounts, but really what I do is elevate my standard user account when I need to, then take those rights away.

What I've seen over the years it can be a matter of convenience for the Users. The first User established during setup of Windows ALWAYS has Admin rights, not a choice given. There is a hidden Administrator account that seldom is/should not be active/visible except when having issues or diagnosing problems. A second User account can be useful and can be either Microsoft Account or Local Account. The Local Account can have either Administrator Rights or Standard Rights. Standard cannot do as many things with the computer that the Administrator can, useful for control of the computer when allowing others to use it. The downside of a second account is it needs a slightly different name so the Users' files don't get mixed together. Also, a second User should first be signed out/logged off then the computer rebooted to get both Users showing on the log-in screen so a choice can be made, simply rebooting won't always allow that choice.

Standard User Account affords more protection than an Administrator Account. I know many forum members prefer the latter, but it's
best to set up SUA for users with less knowledge or poor internet hygiene. OTOH, using SUA is no big inconvenience for most users. My 2c.

I'm glad you don't. I believe in choice.

And I believe in accurate/non-deceptive quoting. Like, seriously, why would you omit the emoji? Not that I expected anyone to truly think or believe that I could or want to rule the world, but if anyone had any doubt, the emoji is significant:

If I ruled the world, I'd make BitLocker mandatory for everyone! 😊

If I ruled the world I would force Microsoft to make Windows 11 compatible with any 64-bit computer (like 23H2 is) without having to bypass compatibility check to install. I would also force them to make Microsoft account optional, like in Windows 10, not mandatory. 32-bit version of Windows 11 anyone? Granted! Want it on an old Pentium 4 computer? Done! Windows 11 32-bit for crap PCs Edition. You can use your old Windows XP key to activate... 😜

Hear, hear!

and here

and again

'sudo' is default on most all Linux systems.

Can Sudo help me modify my BCD while in Secure Boot so that Windows doesn't kill my Linux boot strap?

you should be able to add that to the grub boot loader command line so that its enabled at boot.
thats if grub is doing the boot loading.

also you should be able to install the Debian shim to the boot partition which deals with secure boot and TPM on both Linux and Windows dual boot.

best of luck, Steve ..

Thanks. I'll definitely getting back to you on that, Steve. I need to get Debian back on the SAGE. Windows always seems to find a way to kill GRUB on me and it's very annoying.

it would also be best to install Windows first as Linux will live with the Windows boot manager
but if you install Windows second, after installing Linux, Windows will overwrite the boot partition.
best of luck, Steve ..
