Slow Internet Speed

I'm running Windows 11 Pro through Oracle VM VirtualBox which I have NEVER used before, So I'm kinda of hoping someone can point me in the right direction on this. I have 1 GB fiber optic connection, my network inbound is 1GB. But download speed on it (in Oracle) is down to 8.3mbs. What is the problem?

Check the Virtual switch to see if it is a limiting factor, or if your base OS (I assume it's Windows 10) has it set to a metered connection, or something similar.

Also check the drivers for the virtual switch in Windows 11.

Report back and all of us here can work with you on figuring it out.

I'm sorry, but I have no clue what your talking about "Virtual Switches". I have seen where it that Windows 10 has as "None Meter", and I believe Oracle has the same. Can you help me look for them and then I can report back.

Details might result in better help. What version of VirtualBox? What host OS? How'd you determine the download speed? Are you certain that it's not a transient problem?

You should first install Guest Additons on the the win11 guest. Next, if you took all of the defaults when the guest was set up, you'll end up with a very slow VM. Look at the settings panel for the guest and make sure you have at least 2 CPUs and at least 4 GB of memory. The default networking setup (NAT) is probably ok.

A person who can read my mind, as I have 3 CPU's and 16 GB of memory loaded in. And yes I did use the default networking setup (NAT). I found an article about this Week in Geek: The Fixing Slow Internet in VirtualBox XP Guest Edition and it seems like the only one I can use is NAT. I could be wrong.
But I always love to learned, so lead the way on getting my VM up to speed.

If you make your guest setup look like the following, you may have better luck. You can adjust the number of CPUs and memory, but I recommend that you not go below 2 CPUs and 4 GB if you want usable performance. There are several other deviations from the defaults. On the Motherboard tab in the System settings, I'm using EFI rather than the default BIOS setup (if you change this, you'll need to re-install). In the Screen tab of the Display settings, Enable 3D Acceleration is checked and the video memory slider has been increased to the max (3D is required for rounded window corners in the guest). The Network settings use the default NAT. Finally, the last image shows the guest's download speed, which is roughly 10% slower than the host. A bridged network adapter would be a little faster, but that's more advanced.
