Solved Some Games Crashing Entire PC to Black, Motherboard Off

I've tested with multiple games on all Ultra settings. It runs Hunt Showdown, Horizon: Forbidden West, Marvel Rivals, and Risk of Rain 2 without crashing whatsoever. After about an hour of Helldivers 2 and Remnant from the Ashes, my PC crashes to black, it then takes about 3-5 minutes off (power button does not turn it on) and starts back up again on its own.

I have a tangential issue that may be related involving my PC monitors refusing to wake up from sleep, though the rest of the PC seems to wake up since I hear noise in my headset. I've tried every fix I could find googling "monitor won't wake up from sleep windows 11" and looking on threads like this: .

Temperature seems completely fine, usually around 50-65 in task manager and HWinfo64, I'm not sure if it is a PSU issue and I don't quite have the budget for a new one yet. It may be specific to certain games? I moved the SSD my games were on from one computer to another and for some reason had to unencrypt it (I don't even own bitlocker but windows locked the drive I bought myself with it) and I'm not sure if that may have caused some file problems. Any help is appreciated, I've included V2 Log Collector files below, I think I've seen a couple Event ID: 1001 application error but I can't seem to access them on my computer and I'm not sure if they are related, otherwise no error messages.

Welcome to the forum @jarhead. Very nice setup you have there. @zbook will look at your logs and get back to you on the crashes.

As far as the monitor not waking up and your drives being encrypted, I have a little insight on that.

Every once in a while my monitor wouldn't wake up either. I could usually get video back by using the on/off button on the monitor. I could turn it off and back on and display would usually come back on. On the rare occassion I would have to hard reset the computer to get it on.

One day I did multiple things and my issue seems to be fixed, but I'm not sure which of the things I did fixed it. Since my issue was so random, I could never duplicate it during testing.. Here's are the things I did so hopefully one will work for you..I have an OEM machine but troubleshooting would be the same.

1. update uefi bios to latest from Asus. There is a new one version 0706 dated 12/5/24 ROG STRIX X870-F GAMING WIFI | Gaming motherboards|ROG - Republic of Gamers|ROG Global

2. Download and Update graphics driver using DDU. It seems Nvidia issued a new driver for your card 12/5/24 Download The Latest Official GeForce Drivers

Download DDU. It's a standalone app Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) download version 18.0.8.1
How to use DDU How to use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) Guide / Tutorial

Run DDU in safe mode to delete both the AMD Radeon gpu driver AND its software.
Boot back into normal mode and install the new driver package you downloaded.

3. Update chipset drivers. Recent one on Asus site is dated 11/5/24 ROG STRIX X870-F GAMING WIFI | Gaming motherboards|ROG - Republic of Gamers|ROG Global

4. In control panel> power optionsI choose the balanced plan. To the right in blue, check change plan settings. On the next page, select "restore default settings for this plan" Save changes and restart. Note: In your case you can also test using the high performance power plan. My system is not a gaming machine and that option is not available on this OEM board)

Would you also post a screenshot of your power options. From command prompt run as administrator and typepowercfg -a

moved the SSD my games were on from one computer to another and for some reason had to unencrypt it (I don't even own bitlocker but windows locked the drive I bought myself with it) and I'm not sure if that may have caused some file problems.
It would appear device encryption is enabled by default which encryyts all drives connectd to the machine automatically when running Home version of Windows. You can turn off device encryption. Note that it will take some time decrypting since you have a lot of data.

Suggestions:

1) Run Tuneup plus > post a share link

2) Turn off Windows fast startup

3) Uninstall and reinstall both GPU drivers using DDU as per glasskuter's post

I did a quick search online for the two games @jarhead states he is having problems with. That is Remnant from the Ashes and Helldivers 2. Both of these games seem to have lots of users with PC crashes. Helldivers 2 has a very long support post on Reddit from the game developers about the issues this game has.

The black screen related issues the OP mentions are very common. I've had this myself (haven't seen in for a while now so hopefully it won't come back). 🤞
In my case I mitigated the black screen system freezes by disabling the MultiPlane Overlay setting in the Registry. Nvidia have the reg mod file online for download.

Based on your specs, you are possibly near the power limit of that power supply. How many drives do you have? Do you have any bulky hard drives connected? Or an optical drive? RGB lights or fans?

Based on your specs, you are near the power limit of that power supply. How many drives do you have? If you have more than one nvme or sata ssd you might be losing power.

That is a good point. Perhaps the OP if he hasn't done so run some stress testing software like Aida64 or OCCT which has a PSU stress test?

I have two, 2 TB NVME drives 990 pros, no RGB lights, only two case fans (though I am going to have 5, just waiting for fans to arrive, I haven't worried because temps seem fine), and I don't have an optical drive. I have considered it being a power issue, I haven't run any stress testing software but I can do that. I have seen that the 40 and 30 series GPUs can spike power drain though I've seen conflicting results on if a 850W is enough. I'll run OCCT and see what happens.

You should be fine then. You should have 50 watts to play with give or take same as my rig. It could still be a power supply issue, but I don't think it's due to going over like I originally thought with that information

The only step I haven't really tried is the changing out the PSU (I'll be getting a new one at some point), it's quite weird, it still is unable to wake up my monitors from my graphics card, though the system is awake, I connected to my motherboard and logged in to see if it wasn't detecting my graphics card or something, but it had me restart as it detected a hardware change after I tried scanning for drivers. The restart was weird too, it lagged, froze and then finally restarted and I've noticed that some applications seem to be unnamed when it says to close them (steam for one shows up as untitled or unnamed, I forget which). Could it be how the graphics card is seated?

As for the crashing, I'll be trying more games tonight to see if it crashes again, maybe on lower graphics to see if I can keep it running

Here are the logs from V2 Log Collector from the last couple days, there were some new errors today and yesterday.

Do you use the iGPU or just the Nvidia card?
I disabled iGPU in the bios since I have a RTX 4070 card installed and the iGPU graphics is AMD.
Then removed the drivers and the display entry from device manager.

In the bios go to Advanced > NB Configuration > Integrated Graphics

Which are you familiar with?

a) Turning off the AMD iGPU (using only Nvidia dGPU)

b) Disconnecting the Nvidia GPU (using only AMD iGPU)

c) Running Windows Driver Verifier (WDV)

I'm not super comfortable or confident in messing with display driver stuff to be honest, at least turning off the Nvidia GPU, I can probably run WDV, and can try turning off the AMD gpu, otherwise I may just leave it.

At least for crashing during gaming, I'm not sure if it was adding more fans, turning off unlimited FPS, or one of the many fixes I've attempted, but I at least didn't crash while playing Remnant From the Ashes (at least not in the 2 hour period I played, which is an hour longer than I did before). I'll include the logging files from HWinfo I took while playing but that particular problem may have been just overheating, even though my computer showed it as okay temps. loggingremnant.CSV

As for my monitors not waking up after sleep, they do wake up after shutting down and powering my computer back up. I am using one monitor connected to Display-port and one to HDMI (the one to HDMI isn't always immediately recognized on startup, I sometimes have to go into display settings and then it loads itself). Otherwise none of the fixes I've tried so far have done anything there, I'll probably try turning off the AMD iGPU and running WDV if that is a good idea for that problem.
