Solved Still new to Thunderbird! URLs not clickable links

Maybe I set something incorrectly. Perfectly good URL in inbox mail message is a live link when I open the message on my phone (in GMail) and when I open it in Windows Mail (app), but is just a plain text line in my new Thunderbird. What must I do to give life to the link? (See Frankenstein, "It's alive!"

Puzzling this one Dan.
It's working OK on both my systems with Thunderbird & Thunderbird Beta.
Do you have the option to right-click the link and open it in a browser?
Can you run iTB in safe mode? Top menu, under help, troubleshooting mode.

Nope. Just looks like an ordinary line of text, and doesn't respond to any mouse action. I can select the whole URL, then right-click, and then choose to have Google search for ..., but that's an annoying, unfruitful thing.

Maybe if I delete the portable version and install the installed version? But that will involve going to GMail and re-setting the permissions (again). Not difficult, of course, cuz TBird does all the work when I give it my address and P/W. But I thought maybe there was a setting I couldn't find that said something like "Treat URLs as live links."

Maybe it's just a flaw in the portable version.

No, in TB go to tools/ settings.
Scroll down (all the way, last thing on page) to config editor.
Filter for the term network.protocol-handler.external-default by copying and pasting it into the search field at the top.
A value of false indicates that Thunderbird won't open links in an external browser.
It should be set to True. Toggle it to the right if not.

It was set to true. I toggled it to false, closed TBird, re-opened and set it back to true. Closed and re-opened. Still no joy. Dead URL.

Well, I'll be da*ned! I pasted elevenforum's URL into a message, sent it to myself, and found the link live! So, I copied the dead URL from the message I cited earlier, pasted it into a new mail, sent it to myself, and the link came in LIVE.

The problem wasn't in TBird, but in the message itself, I guess. No, I know. But why would the link be live in the GMail online app and in the WinMail app, but NOT in TBird, until I copied and pasted it and sent it to myself?

Well, problem solved. Somewhat because the link you sent me opened normally in a browser.

That was one of the first (of many) suggestions I found in an hour or more of scouring search results on the Web this morning. Didn't help. But the mystery deepens: see post #8 above.

Thank you again, OAT. I'm going to chalk this up as a very small tempest in a teapot that took about two full hours out of my day today, and still perplexes me. The original is still sitting there in my inbox, with a completely plain-text URL in it. I'm going to forward it to myself now, and I fully expect it to come in with a live link in it. Drat! Sorry to have bothered people over this glitch. I should have done this testing myself earlier, instead of taking the "always certain to be productive" path of posting here.

I kinda thought you had done some research first so you probably saw that TB disables javascripts by default which can cause this for some

I like puzzles first thing in the morning. It wakes me up faster but it's more fun if you solve it.

Just in case anyone was wondering whether I'd been in the sauce a bit early today, here's Exhibit 1, the only one of its kind. I should have checked for more evidence before I jumped to the conclusion that my installation of TB was broken in some way.

It's just as dead in the original as it is in this image copy.

Aaaaand, ... after I deleted the original from my TB installation and it went into the Trash folder on the GMail online site, I got an idea. I moved it from that Trash folder to the Inbox folder online, then downloaded it again into my local TBird inbox. Guess what!?!? Dead URL in TBird, but the same URL is live in the copy in the GMail online Inbox.

I think I'll stop now, while I'm ~~ahead~~ behind. Thanks to all who read and/or helped.
