Windows 11 Pro
If you go to System > About, it shows the PC name and next to it a button to rename this PC.

Below the PC name it displays the PC model or whatever. On my PC, it says Z490 AORUS ELITE AC, which is my motherboard. Which value in the registry controls that? If I search for that string, I find many results. :unsure:

Yes, the macine name is held in many places in the registry, and used for many purposes. The particular one that controls that item in About is SystemProductName in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SystemInformation

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

I did put something creative there. But that creativity is now gone all of a sudden. It is back to the default value. Not sure if it happened after a reboot already or later. :think:

Yes, I've tested and mine gets reset after a restart. I've also tested changing some of the other locations, they all seem to get reset. I suspect that the is no one 'master' registry location from which they all take their lead. It looks more like it's reading it from the hardware at every start up and resetting them all :(

There is another location that (if it exists) will take precedence and be used in place of that SystemProductName.

Create a Reg_SZ value named Model in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OEMInformation

That one survives a reboot.
