tiles instead of pictures

windows 11 pro
running windows 11 on Asus Vivobook, since last windows update I have been unable to view my photos to upload to social media or add to emails, both for family and friends to view, I just get a blank tile, see attachment below, I can go to This PC, select picures and they are all there to view as pictues, I have had this before but cannot remember how tor rectify it.
also when I tried to input my windows version I select run and type winver but windows cannot find winver, again see attached,
all help and advice appreciated

open explorer. top bar the 3 dot menu . . .
then click folder options

in this window middle tab > view
the very first entry on that menu view icons instead thumbnails
make sure that this entry is 'un-ticked'

click apply and then click 'set all folders to this view'
then click OK, see if that helps.

You didn't type 'winver'. What you typed was 'winver,' with a comma which Windows quite rightly said is a file name that doesn't exist.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Typing Winver just tells us what version of Windows 11 you are running so we can diagnose your problem correctly. As stated, you can't follow it with a comma, or the quotes.

Right click the picture and choose Properties
Under Opens With click the Change button.
Select the Photos App to open the file

Also, if you know the extension File type of the photo (ie) .jpg, .jpeg, .tft etc you can
Press the Windows key +I In Settings, go to Apps/Default Apps
Search for the extension file type
if there is no app associated to open it, you can assign the Photos app

That little blue cloud icon is a clue, it shows that the file is available 'on demand' in OneDrive. It is only stored in the cloud at the moment and will only be available if you are signed into Onedrive. If your OneDrive is signed in, then you can copy it and paste into social media, etc. OneDrive will downloaded it to your PC so that it can be uploaded to wherever you like, and the blue cloud will become a green tick. On Win 11 instead of typing winver you can just go to Settings > System and scroll down to About

thank you Bree & glasskutter, I am aware of onedrive but that is my limit, I back up my files to external drives so I need to access onedrive, retrieve my files and shut the thing down, I am not interested in using it, I have located one drive, found my files, what are my nex steps please?

I also do not use OneDrive or any other Cloud storage.

As for the 'generic' icons, sometimes the File Association setting in File Explorer gets changed like when uninstalling a program, have to reset the association to an installed program. I still prefer the older Photo Viewer Legacy over Photos.

found one drive, moved all files to external drive and used revo uninstaller to uninstall one drive and edge
