Just use GPO to set Updates to ‘Notify for download and install’ and to disable notifications for available updates. Doesn’t disable WU but you’ll never get bugged about them and no auto installs.

…And yes, you can enable policy editor in Windows Home via command prompt

I use WuMgr. About every month, I manually image and update 1 month behind. This way I seem to miss the MS faux-pax as they have been corrected or removed. Just makes/keeps my life simple and stress free.
